I have owned an Alembic F-1, a Kern 777 and a Sarno. All amazingly good !! However, there is a preponderance of bass. And when attempting to dial out the bass, the sound becomes to thin.

I play mostly in quieter settings, often with acoustic ethnic instruments [ which are amplified with mics]. As such, my volume needs to be lower but I also want a full sound.

I know this is from a ways back but I thought I could re-address it a bit. I currently own both the 777 and the Monique. I love the 777, but there were some negatives to it for what I wanted to hear that the Monique addresses. To the same extent, the 777 does a few things that the Monique doesn't do.

I found that when recording (and on stage) the Kern always sounded 'soft'. by that I mean lush and big and warm, but I could never get it to really sound tight on the front end of the note, and I could never really get much 'punch' out of it. Even with it run 1-10-1 it ended up lacking definition in the mix. Its very tube in a warm big creamy/pretty way.

The Monique has way more definition and punch and definitely has much quicker feel on the front end of the note. It has the 'other' tube tone. To me its a bit more aggressive, a bit more rough-and-ready and definitely has more punch. No problems with definition in the mix.

In terms of the actual box, the Monique is much more 'stripped down' in feature set, although I don't feel like it needs all the stuff that the 777 comes to the table with.

I'm pretty sure your band needs to play Santa Cruz. Any more of those samples available?

Nothing worth posting right now. We've been working on new material and also working on scheduling some studio time. Hopefully that will come together through April. Unfortunately, it looks like we may be re-joining the drummer hunt as ours is currently being lured by a great day gig in Boston.

Even beer can be dealt with. I've had to do so.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOUSING MONIQUE IN BEER! :)

As to hurt, only if she gets thrown around hard enough to break the glass of the tubes. That isn't easy to do either since there is some shock absorption built in. A component can break loose, but that is easy enough to put back on order.

Electronically, I suppose forgetting to "lift" the ground with 48 volts (phantom power) applied could eventually damage the Cinemag balanced output tranformer. Other than that, input and output are extremely hardy.

In other Monique news, I've been using a Sylvania 6SL7 NOS/JAN in the V1 of my Monique since late fall, when I had the RCA blackplate JAN go bad. And it may be totally psychological, but I really miss the RCA. I can't explain in specifics, but I really liked the bottom end that the RCA had, more weight and extension and the Sylvania seems a bit 'cold' to me. I haven't really had any money to throw at it lately though, and a new one will probably run me a good chunk of change.

I'm sure the same will happen to me when my Monique arrives - but I'll have my F1-X and WP-100 as my other 'flavors'. :hyper:

I've been meaning to ask you, Skies... how did having the fdeck HPF between Monique and the power amp work out?

nostatic thought that it was best not to put anything between pre and power. I respect both of your opinions, so I was wondering if you could share some of your experience having it placed after Monique.

I had thought that the HPF would be best placed after Monique, but nostatic makes a good point about it defeating the purpose of all that wonderful tubeiness.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your views on it, since you've had them both for several months now.
