Julie Slick again

Julie, that could be an added attraction for your shows. I can hear the radio ads now:

"Get a great concert... AND COBBLER! (Varieties may vary by local organic produce. Not available in all areas. no complaints or refunds due to burnt cobbler or bad taste from culinary experiments gone awry.)

Well, actually in Lake Worth we used to play the Bamboo Room, and they'd put us up in apartments. We actually played the last show ever there, though :(

Greetings from Tokyo BTW!

Hey Julie,

Welcome back to the U.S.! Hope the Tokyo gigs were great. Any chance that a recording might become available at some point?

Also, I saw on your blog that you spent a week playing and recording at Marco's, between the Vancouver Island and Tokyo gigs. Can you tell us what kind of plans you guys have for that stuff?

Ah, The Blue Note doesn't allow us to make or share recordings, but maybe I can post some other shows soon (we're playing in South America next week).

Hanging at Marco's was a lot of fun - I'm actually starting a new blog post just for that trip... we mostly decompressed and practiced ABPT stuff, but I did manage to throw a small dinner party (complete with jamming), for special guest Mike Keneally. The next night we recorded, and I'll hopefully have some tracks ready from that impromptu session at some point soon...

Yeah, I figured that was probably the case, and the reason why no vids every showed up on youtube. But I was also wondering if the band had made audio recordings, and might consider selling a download of one of the shows -- maybe through Ade's website, for example. Has there been any consideration of that idea?

Love to hear it! Any plans for any future projects with that line-up?

Nope - as said, no recordings allowed.

I hope so!

I just read your recent blog entry re: Vancouver, the sessions in So. Cal. and Japan gigs. Very interesting reading.

Why is it always the wrong crowd that gets the best treats? I'm sure I'm not the only person viewing this thread that would have loved to be there for that impromptu "Purple Haze" cover by the ABPT with "John the guitarist". :)

I'm left with a few questions after reading the blog.

1. I know you can't speak for Adrian, but after the equipment mishaps incurred with the B.C. gigs, do you believe that he was pleased with the overall result? I'm left wondering a bit if perhaps the splendor of the surroundings and musical environment weren't enough to offset some of the hassles entailed (for a traveled musical veteran like him).

2. Did Adrian have different travel arrangements from you and Marco? I only see mention of the two of you during the United Airlines fiasco.

3. If you know more details of what happened to Adrian's guitar during the Sunday Vancouver show I'd be interested in reading about it. I've heard of strings popping, straps coming loose (see the "Pathetic Bass Player" thread earlier this week when a bassist attempts to whip his bass around his neck and the strap comes loose with resultant bass flying), but a bridge that pops sounds kinda strange - no?

4. Now about the copies of the show at the Whistle Stop Tavern with John (I'm a big fan of his) - where can we get them? :D :bassist: :hyper:

What kind of silliness is that? Why wouldn't they allow you to record there?

Of course, it's not uncommon for venues to prohibit audience recording, but it does seem odd that the band wouldn't be allowed to record themselves. I guess "what happens at the Blue Note, stays at the Blue Note."

BTW, my understanding is that ABPT permits audience taping so long as the venue does. (Is that still true, Julie?) So, maybe some of our South American brethren can help us out next week?

Everytime I see the thread title, I'm reminded of two Slicks...

Finally, a first glimpse (for most of us) of the new ABPT lineup, featuring our favorite Shoeless Shredder:

Um, wow.

Um, wow - to say the least! :) Julie's stage presence has changed a bit since the Rockpalast video - I love the last section, where she's playing from her knees - a little madness indeed! :bassist:

This was the first time I've really had a good look at Marko - his non-crossover technique isn't as prominent as I was thinking - when he plays snare and hi-hat, he assumes the same crossed position as other drummers - (no??) - or am I assuming the wrong definition of a non-crosssover drummer?

looks like he plays strictly crossed over. that's cool. a lot of drummers get used to it and end up sucking when they try to switch around on the hi hat. not saying he's one of them because it looks like he's perfectly capable of it since he can screw the snare stand tight while keeping that beat ;) but i know a lot of drummers who really suck at switching out. i respect a guy who keeps to the strong position at all times. looks cool to switch but you can play anything you want without switching so it's all good.

julie, i see you've got a synth pickup on your bass now. how's that working out for you? also, maybe i'm hallucinating, but i thought you sang now and then and could have sworn you had a mic on some of adrian's shows.

Here's a great vid for anyone who wants to check out Marco's technique:

Thanks for that link - that's the first drum solo that I've enjoyed watching in quite a while. It seems that he's using a smaller kit with ABPT. One of the things I find most interesting about watching Eric is how sparse a set he uses - (IIRC) bass, snare, tom, standing tom, ride, crash (and perhaps one other very small cymbal mounted above one of the others) and a hi hat - that's it.
