3rd finger? Uh.... hasn't NHOP been doing that before the BG even got to prominence? Besides, the way he's looking at his fingers and his stance/approach to the bass, you can tell he's not a DB player. What the ****'s he looking for?
Anyways, yes there is stuff you cannot do on DB. It is quite easy to do a BG style slap/pop on an NSD. There is a youtube clip of it somewhere and it's pretty cool for what it is, mainly because the string heights are so low. For myself, I have been getting this half-electricky sound from my Yamaha. Just a big blossoming bass note that is very even, sustained, and mellow - just awesome for low volume type stuff when I'm comping for someone else. To a certain extent, I prefer it to what I get from my DB but I do like having the variety. Reminds me of the sound Buster Williams gets but not so rubbery since I don't use the black Labella strings.
