Just a simple question...

Not quite related to Luthierism, however, the members of this forum are knowledgable when it comes to wood and stain/paint/finish/anything related to it.

Well, below is a picture of a bass. I think it may be mahogony, however, if it is, isn't mahogony normally lighter than that. What kind of a 'finish' would someone put on it to get it that dark?

It had been posted in a thread in the bass guitar forum, and I have no idea of the original poster is the owner.

Stains can darken wood, and I think tung oil can also darken woods a bit.

Looks like a mahogany body with a walnut PG, body could be Alder with a light mahogany stain, or any darker stain. Striping really makes me think Mahogany though.

I think the grain looks to wide and contrastish (word I just made up) to be mahogany. I could be wrong though.

That is a Koa body with EI Rosewood plates under a natural linseed oil finish.

Looks like Walnut stain. Personally, I don't care for it.
