Just in from NAMM

Just returned as well (about 12am eastern sat.). Another great show. FunkyC, your pics are great !! I wish I would have known some of you folks would be there and then we could have met up.

Lots to see. I have to say my highlight was meeting Phil Jones in person. Of all the folks I talked to, he was by far the most eager to chat of anyone. What a really nice guy. His amps sound thunderous in person and no longer will I knock a driver just because of its size. Chuck Rainey spent most of the day there so I snapped a photo. If I could only get the money up !!

I expected more excitement from the Ashdown booth but was disappointed. Mark was impossible to reach. I did spot a 2x12 Ashdown cabinet that looked very appealing. Just another one to add to the 12 craze.

The Aggie single channel was at the Ag booth and it looked pretty awesome. Wow, those GS412's are serious rock and roll. Killer cabinets.

It looks like Hans Peter over at Warwick is going to be adding a number of new basses including an explorer shape and an 8 string Buzzard bass. I saw them both and they looked amazing. I did not get to plug them in however.

Lot's to see. More will come to me as I absorb the usual overload of information.

It looks like Hans Peter over at Warwick is going to be adding a number of new basses including an explorer shape and an 8 string Buzzard bass


I have checked their USA List price recently and they have added a bass model named cruiser and also a bunch of new amps (TubePath head and CL/CCL combos with neodymium speakers, also some new neo cabs) but I can't get any info, also They have closouts for certain products that I suppose will be discontinued.

Did you see something about this new stuff? I can't wait till they put it all on the website.

Yeah I did not get enough time with Hans to get the lowdown on the new amps and basses but there were some interesting goodies in there.

Indeed the Cruiser is a traditional explorer shape like the old Alembics but has the volume closer to the lower horn (looks awesome) and is a neck through 4. It had 2 P pickups and what appeared to be a 2 band eq. For an explorer shape bass, I'd own one. The oil finishes looked AMAZING.

There was an 8 string Buzzard hanging way up top that looked like the zebrawood 4 doubled. It was probably one of the coolest 8's I've seen yet.

Lots and lots of 12'ers out there in various booths. I was surprised. I missed the guy from Cheap Trick at one of the 12'er booths. That would have been cool.

I'll speak to Hans again from Warwick when he returns. We had no time. Any news I get from him, I'll pass on.

I'm leaving after I play a church service in about 2 hours to go back for day 4 :eek: ! Glad I wore my comfy sneakers!
My .02c worth (adjusted to inflation)...

Nordstrand Booth....Carey's AG bass with the amboyna top...IMO, the most visually stunning bass at the show. There's just something so PERFECT about every minor detail on his basses. The 1st AG bass was there (camphor burl), and was a jaw-dropper, as well. His pickup business got A LOT of interest at the show, as well as the new NX shape. The spruce goose was there, and I believe is sold, as well. They crammed him off in a relatively low-traffic area of the lower hall, but his booth was one of the busiest in the whole hall.
I really am glad that he's having a great show...it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!
Roger from THG knobs was in Carey's booth, too. What a funny guy!! You HAVE to see his new all wood jazz bass covers!! The exact 4 string cover with exposed poles that you'd get from Allparts, except made from exotic woods!! They must be a bit*h to make.. :eek: .
BTW, I have the exact same bass as the new AG bass(amboyna) coming after NAMM, except it'll be a 4! (begins doing a almost-spastic rendition of "The Twist") :hyper:
Rob LoPrinzi (aka Dragonbass) was working the booth with Carey. He's a really sweet cat, and I'm glad I was finally able to put a face with a TB handle!

F Basses....friggin' beautiful!! "Nuff said.

Warrior booth...some really nice looking basses, but the CONSTRUCTION problems... :eek: :scowl: :rollno: . Some of the scariest routing on neck pockets I've seen on any bass at any price. Glue residue (read..blobs) on fingerboards, shabbily fit knobs, etc. A couple sounded OUTSTANDING, but I wouldn't pay their prices for that level of fit and finish. They should have sold to Peavey when they had the chance. Sorry...

MTD...booth was packed! Loved the newest body shape...very appealing.

Phil Jones...Big booth, and I MUST get myself a PJ Briefcase. The tone...wow!

Benavente/LowEnd Basses....well, I spent a good amount of time in this booth. I ended up taking delivery of my LowEnd Jazz bass. It has a really nice tobacco burst gloss finish, a really thick rosewood board, alder body, half tortoise guard, and the newest Bene preamp and pickups. I've gotta say, this bass is FANTASTIC!!!! Talk about QUICK under the fingers!! I've been on a woodshed hiatus for about a year, but this wants to make me stretch again. I spent 4 hours last night with the Real Book blowing over charts...ahhh! :) A super-Jazz with huevos. The only bass (along with the Nordstrands) that gets me that emotional. Really, Chris and Carey have "the touch". Carey gets the nod on construction, though. It's like they were made by robots, but they come out of one man's hands. Chris's basses are a flat-out blast to play (as are Carey's), and a different flavor than Carey's basses...equally as vicious, but a different flavor! Gotta love variety!
They have the Tru-Voice preamp, and a new power amp by Acoustic Image that sounds SO good, I am actually thinking about selling my Woods, and getting the pre and power amp! They're REALLY SMALL, so it wouldn't be that much less portable than the Woods. You have no EQ options; the idea is that you tailor your sound at the bass, instead of at the amp. I would be a little worried about losing so much flexibility, but if it works.....? I am going to put the WW through it's paces tonight, and make a decision from there.
I met and hung out with Jorg from Scroeder cabs...what a cool cat!! His cabs sound friggin' amazing!

I spent about an hour hanging with Trip Wamsley and Kenneth Lawrence...talk about upping your level of association! Two of the nicest men you'd ever meet!!

My favorite booth, though...the Pearl Drums booth! I'm one of their endorsing artists (I am a marching percussion/concert percussion specialist), and from the moment I stepped into the booth, it was sick! They have a second floor on their booth...they have a young lady wearing entirely too little whose sole job is to wait on your every need! Every time I turned around, I had a fresh icey-cold Bass beer sitting in front of me!! Man, I'm glad I practiced my rudiments!!
It wasn't a booth; it was a small city...really. You have to see it to believe the enormity of their display.


Next year, everyone should just plan ahead and spring for a plane ticket to NAMM...it's like a very expensive version of "Candy Land!"

We liked the NX so much that we've decided to represent Nordstrand at The Groove Shoppe. Carey is a fantastic guy and he makes a wonderful product. We've got an NSX5 on order that Carey promises will be spectacular. We can't wait to see it!
