Yeah, I have one bass that can pretty much do it all, but I have yet to see anyone give me a reason why I should only have one bass...or should I say a good reason?Perhaps something along these lines has been discussed before, but recently it had me thinking a bit about it. How many of you use just one bass? Reasons being but not limited to that you own just the one, it's your favorite, gives you all the functions and tone you are looking for, etc. Thinking about it, really in theory all you need is one (unless the obvious if you do different tunings or play in a tribute band of numerous acts and use different basses for the show or something). Now of course I never would say it's a bad thing to have at least one spare, even if it's a "lesser" bass like a Affinity Squier Jazz to your MIA Fender Jazz for example. I know you'd look silly if you have an issue and have no other bass and perhaps some may look at it as unprofessional.
But all that considered, one is really all you need and some actually do use just one. I'll say and then knock-on-wood, I have never broke a string yet nor had an issue with a bass on stage...knock-on-wood.
Maybe it's just cabin fever or boredom from having to be inside most of the day these days due to the pandemic, but thought it interesting to at least share my thoughts on and pick the brains of other bassists on here.
| Bass | Main Use |
| 2001 Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 5H | If I could have only one bass, this would be it. Has that awesome thump/punch. |
| 2009 Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass | Lightweight and great sounding. Strung with black nylon strings. |
| 2001 Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling 4H | Alnico pickups mean it’s great for slap and aggressive rock tones. |
| Traveler TB-4P | Headless design great for tight spaces, tiny stages. Fits in overhead bin on a plane. |

I agree totally, yes if you have one versatile bass that’s all you “need”. If I had to choose one of my basses it would be my 72 Precision. I also like the idea of bonding with one bass. I feel like that instrument really becomes an extension of you when you only play one bass all the time. But I just love basses in general and although I only own 4 basses I love the way each one makes me play differently.Perhaps something along these lines has been discussed before, but recently it had me thinking a bit about it. Nice. Seven previous discussions and this one's still 5 pages deep. Proof that people in a discussion forum prefer an actual discussion with active participants rather than read posts from 5-10 years ago.
This is a retread topic for sure, but I don't mind them. It's fun to revisit preferences like this. Are you happier owning only one bass?
Anyone have only one bass?
What's YOUR reason for owning more than one bass...... or only one bass?
Who is happy owning ONE bass?
How does one justify owning several basses?
Who owns one bass, and is happy with that?
How many of you gigging bassists own only one bass?
Anyone on TB who owns just one bass???
so, I play one bass at a time
You don't have to, yet it does help with a discussion thread/boardApparently one has to have an opinion here![]()
