The thing that pisses me off the most is that a few months back oil companies reported an earning of like $80 BILLION and the still weren't satisfied.
People are in business to make money for their shareholders; not run a charity.
Government made a HECK of a lot more than $80 billion off of the same sales.
Besides, Exxon/Mobile does things other than sell gasoline, and they do it worldwide.

It's $4.45/gal in La Porte (T41).
Of course, I could get it cheaper if I flew down to KGLS, in Galveston...but at Hobby (KHOU), it's $5.16/gal.!!!
Aren't you glad you don't have to fill up two 26-gal tanks there? Or in Huntsville, where it's $5.69/gal???

Here in Cleveland we've been fortunate...gas was hovering just under $3.00 USD for a long time. Just this Monday, however, wham...$3.10.
When I first got my car (2000 Buick Century) it cost me about 15 bucks to completely fill it up from riding on fumes...now it's almost 40 bucks.
I've gotten about 3 dollars per hour worth of raises in those 6 years.
I'm not complaining too much because I'm much better off than a lot of people, but I think there's got to be some kind of revolution soon. Be it a technological one or an actul riot in the streets. Something's gotta give.

Firstly, it's one thing to focus on changes in driving patterns, but they're usually part of a persons "infrastructure" (for lack of a better term). It's not something that most people could change overnight, even if they wanted to. And in many cases, it can often include a further outlay of cash you haven't got if you decide to for example change cars.
Secondly, studies like these imply that if people's driving habits aren't changing, they must be able to afford these high gas prices. The assumption is that peoples spending patterns don't change but that's simply not true. People stop spending on OTHER things. For example, my poweramp savngs fund has been going no-where lately, and we're buying less at the grocery store.
