If US gas were properly priced it would not be around $12 gallon ... this would include road building, use, policing; auto registration and recycling, and all of the other costs that now are paid for out of general funds. We essentially use a big chunk of our income tax dollars (and product purchase revenues) to keep those SUVs on the road.

I say 'we' because I have to pay US taxes (even though I live in Hong Kong, and I also pay Hong Kong taxes). I can't say that I've gotten much benefit from all of the SUVs that my tax dollars keep on the US roads.

As much as this is true, it will do little to stop global warming as long as american industries are going full bore

If only America would have agreed to join in the kyoto agreement :scowl:

Paid €1.38 per litre today for my (European) 95 octane. That's €5.10 for a gallon.. Starting to feel on my student budget. My flatmate and I actually were joking about buying a couple of those 50cc scooters to use in the city, today..

I used to have a Honda 50 when I was 16. I wish I still had it,
the mileage was stupid, like 125 mpg or something. Even the
Kawa 1000LTD I had got 47 mpg. as long as you were cruising
and not goosing it all the time. The motorcycle place near my
house is doing a TON of business in small bikes right now.

The payback is a while, but the idea of just using as little gas
as possible just appeals to me right now.

I know, I had one of the 50cc scooters when I was 15 myself..

I was actually looking into the used market for some dirt cheap old 125-250cc to do my city driving, but the bike insurances are crazy around here - I'd actually pay at least €500 per summer just for the traffic insurance, as anything over 50cc is considered a motorbike. A bicycle is still cheaper :D

Dunno. They seem to like the tiny scooter thingies in Italy, don't they? :ninja:

I'm actually located in Oulu, couple hundred km's south, but you actually are closer than you think about the reindeer thing - I think there are 2-3 people killed and dozens of cars wrecked every year from hitting a reindeer or a moose. Usually this is on the country roads in Lapland, though - the reindeer herders allow the animals to graze where ever they feel like around there.

Can you get a basic car insurance against fire and theft around there? Well, around here it's stated in the papers as "against fire, theft and moose" :) Dunno about the insurances, then.

Motorcycles are generally thought as secondary method of transportation, becase of the snowy wintertime, but perhaps because of the high gas price and emission controls the government might be interested in lowering their prices.. I know the green party already did make a proposition to remove the annual operation taxes (200 euros and up per year) on diesel powered vehicles, as they consume less fuel that's also cheaper than regular gas, over here.
