Artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye were able to deliver clear messages that anyone could understand. IMO, it's not much of a message if most people don't get it.
Now THIS is how you deliver a hip-hop message - it's even called "The Message" - and you can understand every word:

To think racism does not have at least a small part of the vitriol against rap seems a bit naive to me. The other thing I find a little funny is the complaints about not being able to understand the lyrics, rock fans anyone?

To be fair, this is comparing a studio recording to a football stadium performance. Admittedly, Kendrick's material often needs repeat listens because he raps quickly and the wordplay is densely packed. I do wish his vocals had been mixed louder at the show.

But having listened to the studio track "Not Like Us" (admittingly the only KL song I've heard), I don't know if it would make much of a difference. I get the feeling that even a live version of "The Message" would be easier to understand for most people. To each their own...
i'll add michael stipe's mumbling in rem's earlier stuff LOL. I truly wanted to understand the words more completely.
My takeaway, this is exactly why NFL doesn’t hire septuagenarian blues guitar bender enthusiasts with stoker hats and Tommy Bahama shirts to plan the halftime extravaganza.
Agreed with most comments here. Did absolutely nothing for me, eventually stepped aside for a drink/snack/check e-mail/potty break like any other commercial break.
A poor miscalculation on management part. Not sure if they are aware who really pays for the NFL (Not the 20 somethings) Know your customer base, should have gone with a more mainstream, tried and true pop, or a classic
Removing some that are way out of budget, too old, unavailable or dead (i.e. Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson). I would have gone; in no particular order:
- Lenny Kravitz
- RHCP
- Foo Fighters
- Black Eyed Peas
- Bill Joel
- Some kind of 80's or 90's rock montage (i.e. Motley Crew + Metalica + Dimond Dave + smash mouth etc.)
- Ministry (Kidding, but not really. Ok, White Zombie as a compromise)

I remember, waaaaay back in the last century: Super Bowl Half-Time was expected to be "Lame" and MTV had some kind of kick-ass mostly rock thing of their own. IIRC their ratings were way higher than the official half time show... Maybe that would be a good idea for someone to jump on again?
1) I am tired of the first and only reason being racism. If you don't like rap, you must be a racist. If you criticize a non caucasian artist, you are a racist. The concept that maybe they are just not all that is not allowed
2) People are not saying they could not understand, they are saying they could not hear it. There is a WORLD of difference. The vocal was absolutely buried under the backing track.

If you like the tune sometimes the words don’t matter. Usually I can understand some of the words. The music and dance weren’t doing it for me so I was thinking the lyrics might have some redeeming value. I gave it more effort than it deserved.
It’s fair to say there is a racial component baked in. Have there been any white performers since jayz took the reins? I think I saw Eminem somewhere. Produced by ‘Diversified Production Services’. There’s more diversity in a pack of m&m’s.
It’s not fair to say any white person that wasn’t moved to tears by the performance is a hater. That’s just shutting down legit critique. There are some white people proclaiming it the best show ever to certify their antiracist bona fides and some that didn’t like it because of race. Some like it or don't on the merits.
I think Stipe is on record saying lyrics don't matter and people shouldn't worry about finding meaning in his songs. Not surprisingly, I'm not a huge REM fan.
I didn't understand, hearing or reading. It's fine. I don't have to like everything. I wasn't going to mention it until the whole "White male entertainers... thumbs up. Something that isn't that.... 'I hated it.'" came up.

I think NFL does know their viewer base quite well. This show wasn't for those who WERE going to watch anyway, this was to draw a non watching viewer base to the product. Catering to those who were already going to watch wouldn't drive up viewers...it's all about getting more eyeballs.
