Do it. A pair of toe nail clippers is all your need to yank them.

some nylon necklace material from Hobby Lobby as filler. Sand to smooth. Poly-coat 10 times and voila! Done.

I used an old 2x4 that was 6" long to make sure I sanded evenly.

Have seen youtubes on removing frets, and filling/gluing veneers in. But having never done it before, I'd like a guinea pig instrument to practise on. Thinking about it, I think re-fretting will be more difficult than de-fretting, as you will need to work with a straight edge to level everything.

I'm sure the toe nail clippers work.

But - the leverage you get from the real pullers, the strong force you can exert, in a gentle manner - I just don't think that is duplicated with the toe nail clippers.

The pullers make it a really, really easy, clean job.

Hi, Bassmagics, I love your playing, and your videos where the final push I needed to buy an u-bass. I respect very much your music, and that´s why I´d like to ear your opinion on the new aquilas thunderguts... :)

Oops Saw this just now. I haven't yet tried any other strings than the stock ones but will try find the time to try out the Aquila and even the Pyramid Bronze...Stay tuned for tests at playubass.com

@caeman : The pre-amp discussions in this same thread have been of interest to me as well. Had a read on the Fishman website, and went to the LR Baggs site which I have not finished reading yet. The topic of Pre-amps amongst performing musicians could be whittled down to reliability, effectiveness, and not too bulky, (preference was given to have it clipped onto a belt). MixPro and Gig Pro were mentioned. When compared to the Fishman Platinum model, the Fishman has more bells and whistles. Whether the LR Baggs units can can handle Bass signals, when compared to the Fishman's purpose made unit, I have not yet been able to read about. It could maybe just be targetted at acoustic guitars, ukes, mandolins, violins etc?
Compact, effective (nearby, less wires, simple), some sort of shockproof rating, would get me interested.
It makes for good reading. String choice, differs per user. On other forums participants would do eactly what is done here: Recommend what they are happy with.

I did a little 'pre-amp-shoot-out' on my blog a while back. Maybe it's helpful?!

Hi Tim!
Please check out this blog post about some pre amps and the UBass...

Bassmagics,
I have tested preamps extensively. Many are compared on this thread. I have bought, borrowed, and sold more than I want to admit.

To answer Bassbron's questions here, the Baggs para-EQ is awesome for getting a strong, clean bass sound for U-bass. It has loads of gain and has 3 of the most important features of an acoustic bass preamp: a high pass filter, a high impedance buffer, and a flexible EQ. It is a one trick pony IMO, but what it does, it does well. It is pretty transparent tone wise and mostly suited to tune a room as opposed to altering the tone of the instrument. The best sound on that box beat the best sound on most others at home and on gigs. BUT, knobs had to be turned pretty far to make that happen.

But like others have said, the Fishman platinum has more bells and whistles. It takes less knob turning to get a tone I like. That is because there seems to be a Pre-set shape whet it is set flat. Warm lows, even mids, and a polite top. The lows are good, but wooly (almost tube-like, not as tight). That can be a good thing if old school is your thing.

My favorite right now is the F-deck. It sounds awesome by itself and has a powerful high pass filter. It is very tight and transparent. I start there. If I need more I put the MXR 10-band EQ pedal after that. If I need even more than that I put the Tech21 VT deluxe in line. All can be bypassed. If the room is weird and I really need compression that means its probably loud so I go with the Fishman. Those are my 2 go-to rigs and I'm pretty sure I'm set.
