Kala UBass Megathread, Part 3

For SolidBody users we now have the Aquila Thunderguts available for you. These are made in our shop, and use a very precise crimped termination covered in an epoxy heat shrink.

Mike did a quick video of the strings on a solid body a few weeks back. It is on the Kala YouTube page, and also on the UBass Appreciation page.

Thanks!

Any word on if they will be available for the 5 string? With the longer scale and thinner gauge?

Tim,

Aquila is currently working on Thundergut strings for 5 String. Once those are available we will customize the terminations for UBass.

Keep in mind that when the Italians say coming soon, they really mean coming eventually ;)

TalkBass UBass fans,
I have subscribed to this thread and am working on going through all the posts from the previous UBass Megathreads.

It is my intention to learn more about how you the end-users are using the Kala UBass, and what your issues or concerns (if any) are with the instrument. As a musician myself I am also interested in all the other chatter that is non-UBass specific.

I don't want anyone to feel like I'm using this forum as just an outlet for new UBass products etc and so I think I will post future new product announcements on just the Kala website, and UBass Facebook page.

My goal will be to answer questions as best I can, and support you guys (and gals.)

Have a great day,

What he meant was: they are Terminated in their shop.
The string itself is manufactured in - glorious Italy.

Mark - I don't remember the forum rules on this, but as far as what we'd enjoy - I'm sure Most subscribers here would love to get a pointer to announcements here. We are very, very passionate about this amazing bass, and we want to hear everything about it. In realtime. :)

If you don't mind, I'll summarize some themes that you'll see among the megathread:

- We love our string choices. The Pahoehoes are great, and the Thunderguts are an amazing alternative.

- There have been some concerns about QC - specifically related to die cast tuners breaking, and what people perceive as inconsistent intonation across the fretted models. It has pushed a few of us over to fretless land, which we love. I think some of us would enjoy hearing more about the manufacturing process, especially as it relates to the placement of the bridge.

- How about a sound hole cover that fits the acoustics? :)

- Some of us are hoping to someday see a fretless solidbody in the SUB line or price range.

- Lots and lots of experimentation goes on regarding preamps. Maybe you guys should identify a low cost one that does a good job, and stock/recommend it.

- Maybe you could consider working with us when there are new products. i.e. When the Pyramids came out, most of us were gun shy for a 50 dollar experiment. It would have been great if you would have comp'd one or two people here with sets so that they could test them and write about them. I think we would have voted for Tim and Justin.

I could go on and on. That's enough for now I guess.

Mark, no problems. We the users started these threads, not Kala. That you are present to provide answers and support is cool and welcome by the user base.

I am using my U-Bass to play blues, klezmer, bluegrass, country, contemporary christian and various folk music.

If you want YOU yourself to be able to hear, just put the sound hole on the side of the guitar facing the player. A pair of f-holes would look classy. I would be willing to go without any sound holes. I am not a traditionalist, so I am not hung up on such things as preserving appearance for appearance sake.

Mark,

+1 to you being present here. This is the go-to spot for u-bass enthusiasts. We want to be part of the dialogue and we are generally very interested in all developments at Kala regarding this instrument and related products. Many other product-specific threads on this site have presence from company reps and it is very much appreciated.

...and +1 to all the points SBassman said.

One of the ways I use mine is in backing my wife who plays in a local uke club and we jam acoustically, as do the other club members who own one. That's a group you won't see on TB but I think the sound hole and uke form factor are important to them.

I also love when I use it for crowds who can only see uke onstage and can't work out where the bass is coming from.

:)

When I used it a couple of times with my previous band, a couple of band mates made less than flattering comments about the Look, but the crowd flipped out in a positive way. I was mobbed by people asking about it and saying how great it sounded.
