That song is about a girl who was mean to her when she was younger, not her exes. I've had to sit through her albums a zillion times myself :)

I think he definitely has talent and I like him although I wish sometimes he would tone down some of the antics but I think that may be because of dealing with his mother's death they were very close. I don't know why as musicians we are bashing other forms of music and then asking people who do like those forms of music not to take offense when their music gets bashed?

If Kanye had just shut his piehole outside of performing, and never messed with Autotune, I think he'd be considered one of the more interesting and respected rap artists around. Alas...

I find it best not to respond to the TBers who feel the need to go into any rap-related thread and vent about how the entire genre is junk. The real discussion only gets lost in the process.

A keyboard is a digital piano, it is digitized version of an analog instrument. Have you ever used an MPC? You cannot do anything with them unless you load samples into all your pads, very different than a keyboard with which you can sit down at and play. Almost all samples are taken form other people's music, in fact, most beat makers pride themselves on stealing work that falls under free use and hasn't been sample/stolen before.

If a rock band were to "sample" a 16 bar phrase they would promptly get a cease and desist order or a lawsuit, even if they did it from a hit decades old. You don't remember Led Zeppelin?

I am not going to deny it takes time and effort to make a beat, but the talent part is minimal at best, it takes a good ear and in Kanye's case, well secured licensing rights to old hits. If you start with a hit song, it makes it a lot easier to make a hit song.

A keyboard is a layout- it doesn't have to have any piano sounds in it at all (no one's going to mistake a Moog for a Steinway once you play it). And again, the only reason you can just sit down and play it is because someone already loaded it with software and samples. That's a very bizarre way of trying to define what an instrument is. That's like saying a bass isn't an instrument if it doesn't have strings on it because you can't just sit down and play it. Of course it is- just put the strings on and play.

And chord progressions can't be copyrighted. There's a reason why most rock songs sound like a song you've heard before. It's because most of the progressions have been played umpteen times before in other hit songs. Most orchestral musicians spend most of their lives playing other people's music. I've never heard an orchestra and said, "Pffft, they're not musicians- they're just playing someone else's music!" :D

The beats in rap are seldom the thing that interests me most anyways. It's the rhythm of the phrasing. I even listen to some rappers whose lyrics I really dislike if their rapping skills are great. That's music in and of itself- a great rapper is like a great drummer. Keeping up 3-5 minutes of non-repeating constantly spoken lyrics continually phrased in interesting rhythms is not even close to easy, and is an art in and of itself to me.
