FWIW........My band has covered three of her songs in a rocked up format. Always gets the women going at shows cuz they know the words. Same at fests except younger children know the music as well. We also rocked up Pink covers and got similiar responses.

The haters can go pound sand.. KP is freakin' awesome. "Pop" does NOT equal "bad", and music isn't automatically great because it's old or because you were stoned when you first heard it on that Panasonic cassette player in your mom's crawlspace. She's really good. Her arrangers and producers are absolutely top notch and make her recordings just amazing. Live, she needs a little more confidence in that voice. If she solidifies her live chops, she will be incredible, because her voice is really pretty. But she's got a little ways to go before she hits Celine Dion territory.

Well. Michael also wrote most his material himself. So does Katy Perry, she co-writes most of her songs.

She is pretty talented, I have to grant it, and of course she's cute and plays the sex bomb card pretty well. But comparing hit songs today to hit songs in the 80s is apples to oranges -- the whole business is different.

No offense, she's probably about as good as most pop gets, but thirty years from now nobody is going to be talking about "California Gurls" as a landmark album the way they do "Thriller," nor is anyone going to put her in a category with Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe as a great beauty.

But it is in the same category as "Thriller" in the way the OP told us - they are the only two pop albums to have five #1 singles. For all we know, Katy Perry's album will end up with six.

The artists themselves don't compare, though, I agree with you there. MJ was a legend in his own time. Katy Perry is a very popular artist at the moment.

+1 to Ken on his slap bass comment. Katy Perry's album gives us a great counterexample against the weekly thread asserting that slap bass is dead in modern music.

Dude, hate is quite a strong word! you just hate the genre and all that is related to it? You are allowed to dislike the music, but there can always be exceptions...

The fact that it was Kenny G adds to the humour in the video IMO. you have Rebecca Black, Hanson, Kenny G...

And honestly, if you can't go to a party and at least enjoy goofing around to one of her tunes, I feel sorry.

I've heard numerous versions of this and would not claim that I knew which one is indeed accurate to the facts.
The one thing I am quite sure of is that Toto did not get the credit they deserved on those recordings.
Not by a Looooooong way.
I also have the feeling that MJ got quite too much.
Doesn't matter tho-I like all those albums regardless of who did what.

Well, here's a story I heard from a coreographer that worked for both Michael Jackson and Madonna.
He used to hang out with Madonna, took her to gay clubs. So the dudes were dancing "vogue" style at these clubs. Madonna took the steps, made the song, got a number one hit.
So she got her influence from somewhere, changed it a bit and made it mainstream. I think it takes a lot of talent and brains to be able to do that.
I suppose it's sort of what MJ did with Toto.
I do think they can take credit for that.
