Well, here's a story I heard from a coreographer that worked for both Michael Jackson and Madonna.
He used to hang out with Madonna, took her to gay clubs. So the dudes were dancing "vogue" style at these clubs. Madonna took the steps, made the song, got a number one hit.
So she got her influence from somewhere, changed it a bit and made it mainstream. I think it takes a lot of talent and brains to be able to do that.
I suppose it's sort of what MJ did with Toto.
I do think they can take credit for that.
I was not talking about mere influence.
Toto played on a lot of that stuff and were directly, not indirectly involved. Steve Porcaro wrote "human nature".
If I was talking influence only, I would have said that MJ danced like james brown and sang like Smokey Robinson.
