Keeping amp from sliding around

So I’ve been noticing all kinds of ways people are keeping the amps from sliding around on top of their cabinets. Velcro, straps, Hinges, non slip mat, foam. You name it, I’ve seen it on here.

What I haven’t seen is the idea of putting some neo magnets under the Tolex, or other cabinet covering. The adding magnets to the bottom of the amp.

This is how a bunch of companies used to do caster plates for large PA speakers and it worked great.

So anyway what do y’all think of doing the same for amps and cabinets. This would keep you from accidentally pulling an amp off a cabinet and allow for tilting cabinet back without amp sliding.

If done correctly, you would not even know they were there unless they were in use holding things in place. Just seeing what people think of the idea.

Fender has a patent on that for amps.

I've never seen it on casters, IMO it would pick up way too much magnetic junk to be useful.

I knew that was a Fender thing, but didn't know it was patented.
Now I know why it's a Fender THING.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why cargo straps would or wouldn't work?
I'd think one strap around the side of cab and over the amp would do the trick. It seems you wouldn't have to crank it down very much to do the job.

I had “kick off” caster plates for a bunch of my old EAW KF and SB series cabinets. I was just think a couple of small 3/4” magnets in top of cabinet and a couple on bottom of amp. Just a thought.

Lots of chassis are aluminum aren't they? You'd have to have magnets on the amp too in that case.

Would introducing a magnetic field strong enough to hold 5+ pounds to a cab at an angle interfere at all with the amp though? Introduce noise, mess with inductors? IDK

We use black ratchet straps. One hook in each handle of the bottom cab and over the amp side to side. Hard to see and they don't have to be cranked down, just snug. Our vocal and guitar mains are stacked on our bottoms and we do the same. Nothing is going anywhere.

A steel mating insert is necessary with an aluminum chassis.

The static magnetic field isn’t an issue.

Get a roll of that drawer or shelf liner from Wally World. (photo above) Cut off a piece to fit. It works wonders. No patent to worry about.

The whole concept of the magnets was to not have to mess with anything like straps, anti slip pads, etc. I’m one of those people that HATES Velcro. (Usually ends up come off and leaving a mess of nasty glue residue) I was looking for a clean and easy way to attach them together. I have a habit of going out of my way to come up with clean, efficient system layouts. Maybe I’m just a little OCD.

I’m having a cabinet build right now, I was thinking of having some magnets counter sunk into the top before the tolex went on. Then add them to the base of the amp.

I love the concept but feel like between my house and car I would pick up so much random junk. I don’t like the Velcro because I pick up hair. I always thought amps should come with clips almost like this.

I own a Rumble cabinet with this type of attachment, and the magnets have never picked up debris.

But, keep in mind that the magnets are to keep it from rattling/bouncing, not to keep it from moving. The amp is kept from moving laterally by recesses that the head's feet slot into; the magnets are just there to help dampen vibrations that could rattle the amp in its sockets.

So each magnet only has to be 1/4th the strength necessary to keep the amp from rattling.

If you keep your cabinets in a place where lots of ferromagnetic metal shavings/particulates get thrown around, then it might be an issue. But I would say that collecting junk on the magnets would be the least of your worries if you're getting metal particulates around your gear...

EDIT: Just realized agedhorse was talking about magnetically attached casters; that case would cause more worry for debris...

Just put a few beers on top of the head. That should weigh it down enough.

The 3M adhesive used with Velcro generally makes quite a mess of cabinet vinyl.

Yes, specifically casters. I have a wheeled magnet bar that I use in the shop to pick up stray steel nails, screws, etc. It also picks up a ton on magnetic shavings and dirt.

That might be a good idea.
I bought a new Trickfish .5k amp and TF 212 cabinet after having only combos. So, I posed the question, what is the best way to secure my new amp to my new cabinet? My favorite answer was (and I’m paraphrasing) ‘Couldn’t you just be careful?’ That’s what I’ve been doing. No straps, mats or magnets and it’s working out well so far.
