Kia Soul ... or another suggestion

I must concur on the Kia soul, wife and I bought a new Kia rio and we love it , it's small but inside you would never notice great on gas as well,, we took my daughter down and she bought a soul, great car , in going to get one myself, great warenty as well , give it a look , best of luck
My forester can get 43 downhill, averages 34mpg most of the time. Souls are great too though, good fuel economy.
The Toyota Highlander has a lot of capacity. It's so-so on fuel efficiency.
Just think how many paralegals you could pull though! Uncle Tasty would probably be down.
The soul seating position is great. people seem to really like it for long drives. I haven't done more than 1.5hr on mine so I can't say. It is more comfortable and quieter than the 2000 honda accord it replaced.
The 2014 soul is very solid and actually fairly heavy. Was riding some washboard dirt roads today and was very pleased with how it held to the road. 16" wheels in the base model. I just have a manual transmission base model with 1.6L engine...getting 33 to 34.5 mpg this summer. Having added all costs...I got mine for 12.7k new off the lot.
I would suggest the 2.0L, especially if you will be going 60+mph for trips. I keep mine under 60mph whenever possible (for mpg). The 2L is geared a bit better. Upgraded interior has won some serious acclaim.
Oh yeah you'll want to get a real spare tire (it only comes with some lame kit!), I found one for 12 bucks at a junk yard, an official kit is quite a bit more.

If you had all-seasons on it, a FWD with snows probably works better.
Tires are the limiting factor for most situations is tires. I don't think there is much appreciable difference between FWD cars, which seem to be your considerations, when it comes to going in the snow. If you want to go and stop in the winter you'll put winters/snows on. A fwd car on snows will beat awd on all-seasons.
