Kia Soul ... or another suggestion

We just bought my wife a Hyundai Tuscon SE about two months back. So far, she absolutely loves it. Plenty of room for any of our needs, high up enough to make putting the upcoming kid in the car easy, reasonably good fuel economy (not the best I've seen, but I can still hit 31+ mpg on the highway pretty easily. Around town is only 24-25 mpg though), handles well (not much body roll, so it doesn't feel like it's going to tip over when you turn. At least not at moderate speeds), and is quite comfortable.

The other one we were looking at was the new Nissan Rogue. I'm still a huge fan of that, with a little more cargo room than the Tuscon and some supremely comfortable seats. We just got a better deal on the Hyundai, and liked the longer warranty that went with it.

I also recommend a VW GTI if you want something more sporty and enjoyable. That was my previous car, and I absolutely loved it. With the back seats folded, I had plenty of room (bought a recliner and it fit in there, bought a chest freezer and it fit in there, and I've always been able to move my guitar and bass gear with ample room). Great fuel economy, a true joy to drive, always got complimented, and was just a great car all-around. Plus, with the new model coming out, you'll probably be able to find some good deals on the outgoing model in the near future if you're looking to buy new (or get a 2015 if you want the latest and greatest model).

I just sold a 2005 BMW X3 for $13,ooo that I bought used back in 2008 for $20,000. It had plenty of room on the inside for my bass gear yet was small and nimble around town and with the all wheel drive did great in ice and snow. I think I averaged about 20mpg in the city and about 30mpg on the highway. Moved to an area where I no longer need an AWD car so I sold it.

Our company has a couple of Souls and they are very fun to drive. They site pretty low to the ground and could get hung up in deeper snow.

I had a Honda CR-V and it was loud and uncomfortable. Crap AWD system that's hardly any better than FWD. Very reliable though.

For NE winters, I'd likely look at either the Subaru Outback, Forester, or a Toyota Rav4.

I love my VW's. My gal is on her 3rd ( as of this weekend ) Kia and LOVES them. Her first was a dead basic Kia Rio and I gotta tell you I was impressed with that lil sucker. We put some serious miles on it and it never missed a beat. Even when it ticked over 200k it was running better than you would expect. The paint, however, was not so great. Her's was silver and the bumpers began getting that washed out fade to black about 2 years in. She does wash her cars every weekend, so that might have helped with it, but still it's something to consider. Her 2nd took 3 years, but the bumpers started doing the same thing ( red paint on the Spectra ). She just got a Soul and loves it. Personally I'm not a fan.. but I'm right at 50 so it could be the codger in me :D
