Subaru has used two platforms for all it's cars for the past 20 years, although they now have three with the joint Toyota GT86/Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ sports car. The Impreza is the compact which is used for the WRX and XV (which replaced the Outback Sport), and shares a platform with the Forester. The Legacy is their mid-size which is also used in the Outback. Outbacks (Sports) and XVs have a lifted suspension (more ground clearance).
The XV has a rather anemic engine from what I hear, I was just correcting you as to what the XV was. The US Legacy is AWD as well.
Really, you would probably be fine with FWD on snow tires for like 95% of the time, staying on roads of course. Do you care about having fun while driving, or more appliance minded? (Either is fine)
If I used knowledge as a requirement for a job, I'd have to do EVERYTHING.

I've got an '09 Honda CRV. I think it's pretty awesome as an every day sort of car, as well as for travelling for gigs. I've been able to easily get my rig and instruments, an entire drum kit and enough luggage for a three day stint on the road. My version is the FWD model, so I get a little better mileage than the 4WD version. But since the model was redesigned a couple of years back the mileage has definitely improved.
From a repair standpoint, I've done okay. I've got over 100K miles on mine, and really, it's been great from a maintenance standpoint. New tires, brakes and oil changes on a regular basis. The only thing that was an issue had to do with the air conditioning compressor clutch. Honda recognized that it was a borderline recall sort of issue and cut the price on that repair significantly.
Used CRV's are out there. I think they're worth the money, personally. In fact, my wife is looking to get a bigger car and we're considering the possibility of getting another CRV.
