Killed my Deltalite 2512

Everything seems fine.
I forgot how much stuffing this cab had in it. Studio foam egg crate. 2" thick at the valkeys, 3.5" at the peaks. I got the cab this way and never took it out. I've been told this stuff doesn't work in the first place (in this application).
Should I remove it? Does it work and I'm losing a ton of box area/volume?

Deltalites come with that connection method. Im having trouble remembering, but I believe Kappalites do as well.

Good news, good news.


For these occasional loud gigs, rather than buying a kappalite unless you want one anyway, I'd be inclined to just run more speakers. Split up the workload rather than pound hell out of fewer speakers, whatever kind they are.

Your Eden has 2 channels. Can run a lot of cabs if need be.
 
The box's internal dimesions would be, if not for the egg crate 14.5" d, 17" h, 17" w.
With the crate (measuring half way thru it's peaks and valleys) it's like 12x12x11.
I don't know if I should remove it or not.
The port tube's I.D. is 3", and it's 6 5" long

Thanks for the detailed information on cabinet and port dimension. You did a great of providing us with what we'd need to hopefully make useful suggestions.

The volume occupied by the open-cell egg-crate foam can be ignored; it will actually increase the effective internal volume a bit in some ways though not in others, so in effect that volume is not "lost".

I estimate that your cab is tuned to about 29 Hz (taking the foam into account). I suggest adding two more identical ports, perhaps arranged so that at least one is above the woofer magnet and one below (helps a little bit with cooling). Also, I suggest removing most of that foam - try using maybe 20% coverage of the internal surfaces, mostly along the 17" walls because they form a square. Where you have foam on one wall, you want bare wood directly across from it. Too much foam can suck the life out of the sound, and frankly I'm not sure why, because "on paper" it looks like absorbing the midrange energy inside the box is a very good idea. The tuning frequency goes up slightly when we remove the foam - this illustrates one of the ways that foam make your box appear to be a bit bigger, but the foam also absorbs bass energy and reduces "thump".

Okay with those two additional ports and a lot less foam, the tuning frequency will be about 50 Hz. And you will have a much more flexible cab! You see, in the plumbing department at your local hardware store, you'll find a product called an "expandable plumber's test plug". The 3" size can be used to very tightly plug a 3" ports. So now you will be able to choose between 50 Hz (three ports open, biggest bottom end), 41 hz (two ports open, tighter bottom end), and 30 Hz (one port open). Or if you have a gig in a really boomy room, plug 'em all. If you try two ports open, plug the middle port, so that you still get a bit of "chimney effect" cooling from the top and bottom ports.

Very good basic cab design - it lets you add two more ports and imo end up with a really sweet cab.

I appreciate all of the work you just did for me. The port tube is just a piece of ABS waste tube, and I have a hole saw perfect for that size, so adding ports should be easy. I will do all of those things. I like the versistility of that arrangement.
It would also be easy for me to cut down the length of those tubes as well. Is the length as much a factor as the diameter? I could Sawzall the existing on half as long very easily.
I didn't mention that it's rear ported, if that matters.
