King Koa - Now With Nordy's!

I want my fretless to leave sicker than it arrived, with a serious case of ass-itosis!!

In preparation for the trip on Monday, I just yanked out the Nordstrand DC's and the Audere 3ZB. The 3ZB preamp is officially up for sale, but I'll probably hang onto the DC's. I still like me some Dual Coil action, and may come back to these in the future.

What became of the fat stacks as listed on the specs, or did they never exist and has the bass always had DCs?

The Fat Stacks came out almost immediately. They just weren't a very good choice for fretless, they're mwah killers. I still have them, although they're just the guts, no shell. When you do the wood covers from Nordstrand (which they no longer make), they make a special pickup size that drops into the whole in the middle of the wood block. So I think these Fat Stack guts that I still have are pretty much useless unless someone out there has a set of the wood shells to bring to the table...

I plan to hang onto my ebony shells and the DC's. I guess I could also put the Fat Stack guts back into my shells and use that for a fretted bass... but then I'd have stranded DC guts. Sigh...

This is at the top of my list of things to try next. I'm still waiting on my Nordy preamp for King Koa, and I'll want to give that a shot first. But then comes the Pope if the Nordy leaves me wanting...

I've always been a little bummed that neither of my Roscoes is a "true" Roscoe, in the sense that the electronics in them have always been atypical. With the Bart/Bart conversion on my fretless, I'm hoping I get a big ole smile on my face knowing that I now own a Roscoe that sounds like most other Roscoes. 'Cause I do love the typical Roscoe tone!

I bet this is the case. It's hard to deny the classic Roscoe tone, especially for a fretless.

Very interesting. I wonder if anyone other than Nordstrand is equipped to make suitable covers. Either way both sets of pickup internals you have would be great in another bass eventually.

Shouldn't be too hard a piece to fabricate, soapbar size block of wood, with a rout out.

Biggest thing to get happening is to find the RIGHT piece of wood, or stabilize the "not-so-right" one well (I like using epoxy, but there are other, possibly better, ways).

Ebony, pau ferro, cocobolo will be pretty good without a lot of effort, anything else will need some kind of protection.

I've got ebony on my CenSigVI fretless, and wenge/African tulipwood on my CenSigVI fretted - I didn't do anything to the ebony, the wenge/African tulipwood got several thick coats of epoxy and are holding up very well.

If all went according to plan, Jeff should be ALMOST back to Canada right aboot now. It was nice meeting you, Jeff, and I hope you dig that bass for a long time to come.

I made it back to Blacksburg just in time for our Monday Night Jam. My fretless was converted to Bart/Bart today by Ryan down at the Roscoe shop. And I am tickled to death with the results. Man, my fretless now has bottom like it never has, and there's plenty of mwah to be had (all very nicely controlled by the mid knob). Color me extremely happy, and PLEASE shooot me in the head if i EVER talk about changing the electronics in my fretless again. That one is DONE, and it is now awesome!!

King Koa officially sounded like crap tonight (as I expected it would). That Demeter pre and the Nordy J PUPs is an epic fail combination. Way too much clackiness. I can't get onto the next thing with King Koa soon enough, I'm anxious for that one to start sounding good again...

I got in a bit later than expected when all was said and done (around 2 am), but the drive was ok. It was awesome to meet you and to pick up the bass in person. I definitely will enjoy it!

That one is DONE, and it is now awesome!!
