am i the only one who saw it and thought santa? with a pointy cap, cause it's paper, and he can't make it bend...i dunno. hen the white below is like the beard...don't judge me. my mind thought was "santa...dunce cap...knight...kkk? oh crap..."

then again i've grown up in richmond, va, the city where the civil war will never die, so i just don't care either way. let the parents screw their kid up instead of dropping it. why people have to do what they do sometimes boggles the mind. :/

A pointy hat is just a pointy hat until you put a meaning into it. In the picture, you can clearly see how proud the child is w/ his creation, and the effort he took to make it. I doubt the child ever thought what he created is anything related to race. And that is how every one of us should be. For the parents to be offended rather than be proud of what his son learned in class, shame on them. Maybe they should learn from his son, and never let color play into their daily life.

I think the parents have actually done more harm to their child then they think the school did. They have effectively passed on their own racism to their child with this over reaction and have now taught this behavior to their son. Another generation of racism and hatred passed on.

You can bet that even Mel Brooks knew that if his movie ever ended up on broadcast TV it woud be censored. It shouldn't be that hard to imagine a situation where the wrong audience might end up viewing it uncut.

Broadcast is different than cable imo. Broadcast is free and can get picked up pretty much anywhere, cable you have to pay for, and cable, at least nowadays gives parents a MUCH greater amount of control as far as what they allow their kids to get their hands on. You can put parental locks on anything with a TV-14 or higher rating for example.

Edit: How did we get from talking about the original point of the topic to discussing FCC censorship policy?

Blaming this on the PC bogeyman doesn't make any sense. Broadcast TV's been sanitized from the get-go.

And piggybacking with Brad's earlier post, I am usually a little confused when people start screaming "Censorship! Censorship! Aaaarghh! What are you, a commie? This is America!" when they can't, oh, I don't know, put f words and genitalia on basic cable, for instance? I've got a rant boiling under the surface about how the country we live in is overrun by shallowness and selfishness, but meg. Too many keystrokes. Somebody posted a Carlin quote in another thread that sums it up pretty well.

I can see how this connection would be made - especially by someone in a group that has historical reason to be aware of visual images like the one provided.

Not difficult to figure out why this would potentially be a sensitive issue with the parents.

Perhaps more difficult to figure out why they were compelled to make a big deal of it instead of just letting the school know they didn't appreciate it.

This is true, but there is the issue that some folks may be overreacting to something totally innocent. A few years back, a certain school board voted to censure a teacher/professor for using the word "niggardly". For those who don't know, it's a perfectly legit word that means basically, miserly, or cheap, it has nothing to do with the infamous "N" word. The only reason they wanted to ban the word was simply because it "sounded" like that certain racist term. Basically, they decide to censor a word because some idiots thought it had racist connotartions that simply did not exist. Ignorance, plain and simple.

I get it (meaning I know why people overreact), I just don't get it. A simple parent-teacher conference where you make your feelings known and maybe request that IN THE FUTURE more consideration might occur should've sufficed IMO. Instead this kid, who quite possibly had friends at this school, got yanked. There's proving a point and then there's going overboard. Barring any new evidence to the contrary of course.

As the juvenile participant in a couple of pretty funny parent-teacher conferences in the past, I think this would've been the adult approach. And how often does that happen?

It's like the telephone game;)

That was a local thing. And it was an aide to the then mayor of DC, not a teacher/professor. In fairness, I'm pretty sure I saw an interview where the guy who used the word said in hindsight it was a poor choice. That's usually not mentioned when the story is re-told.

As to the people being idiots, unless you know the meanings of every word ("niggardly" is hardly a commonly used one) that would make others idiots too. Right?
