I rather enjoy Dr. Cheese's threads concerning these issues. I may not always respond appropriately, but that's because I'm probably better off reading them instead of participating.

I agree with this. I haven't been around long enough to know what people have posted in the past, but as divisive as this thread has been, for the most part we are having a pretty civil discussion about some very sensitive topics. There is something commendable about that. IMO that is the only way to come to a meeting place in the middle.

No one here is going to change anyone's mind but we can all get a better insight into what other people believe and why. I say bring your opinion and make it known. I think a lack of understanding for other peoples' perspective and lifestyle is one of the basic components of prejudice and bigotry. Though I don't agree with all of what Dr Cheese has to say I welcome his perspective as long as we can remain civil.

It doesn't appear on my iPhone. I am still bot convinced that this is a thread about white people being racist towards black people. I think people are looking to find that angle to support their hypothesis about Cheese. The reality is there is no racism here, just a case of insensitivity at worst and just "oops" at best. My honest first reaction was a knights hat.

I mean would this story change at all if the teacher had been black?

I see why you would say that, but I think you are really using a best-case-scenario-benefit-of-the-doubt approach.

As I've said before, taken one at a time, the Cheese race threads are easy to dismiss. It's the cumulative effect of the overwhelming volume of such threads that makes some people feel otherwise and stop seeing them as quite so innocent in nature.

And there's a really fine line between "racial insensitivity" and "racism" in my book. I think sometimes people interchange those terms, sometimes from ignorance, sometimes as a rhetorical device to not appear so radical.

It wouldn't. It would still be insensitive for a student of either race to be sporting what could be construed as a Klan hat. If anything it's culturally insensitive in the US to not see the potential issues with a Klan like hat. You clearly have your Cheese hypothesis, but trying to fit every threa into it just comes off as hackey. While we're speculating, I will speculate that if the teacher were black, you and I wouldn't know a thing about this story, because it wouldn't have gotten past the principal's office, if it even went that far.

And that makes it racial in my opinion.

I've said it before, but I intend to stick to my intentions this time. This will be the last thread of this sort I will start. I will surely talk about race related issues, but I will post no more threads of black/white conflict or interaction. I am at peace with my reasons for posting, but I am tired of gettingcast as someone who is out to make whites look bad, as if I imagined the incidents that I have talked about.

I'm done. All of you who claim to dislike these threads so much need to put your money where your mouth is and stop posting too.

This. Exactly. I've gone through all 10 pages of this argument and nowhere was it stated by the OP that this thread was to point out any racially motivated actions. It's a story of poor judgment on the parts of all adults involved and the unfortunate victimization of a young kid.

There are too many here (I've fallen into it myself before) that see one of Cheese's threads and automatically pull out this:

Doc, you posted that your done with this kind of stuff, but I think you should keep going. I don't participate much in these "race threads" because I'm on thin ice here and i don't know what I'll post that a mod may infract me for. Anyway, I read them and enjoy them.

I don't think a home-made oaktag hat is on the same level as a swastika. I'm also well aware of Muslim sensitivities [especially Mideastern] regarding the needless slaughtering that cats like "Richard the Lionheart" inflicted on the Jewish and Muslim populations of the Levant.

Having said all this, I wouldn't have put such a hat on a kid. A better design would have been to simply cut off the top and glue/staple it closed.

On the topic, is it not true that creating any sort of fuss over this, or issues like it, just ignites more tension? Hypothetically, if every black person were to wear a white cone shaped hat as the newest fashion trend around town, surely the KKK would eventually start to feel a little silly, no? Why fear it? I didn't watch the vid, but that makes a bit of difference, as the fact that the kids made their own hats.
