knife vs multitool

As far as travelling, I don't think you'd manage to get a multitool on flights either these days!

You're right, of course; that was 25 years ago, when things were slightly less paranoid than they are now. I was traveling all over Europe then, on military construction projects; since I was the Engineer/Surveyor, and usually outranked every one else on the project, nobody laughed at my Swiss Army knife. Borrow it? Yes; frequently. Laugh?:scowl: I should add, though, that Leatherman had just invented the multi-tool at the time; there weren't many of them around. Mine was one of the first. Plus, I agree that some Swiss Army knives are a little flimsy; especially the ones with everything imaginable in them, and if they're made by Victorinox. Mine have always been made by the OTHER company that makes them for the Swiss Army - Wenger. Much sturdier.

I have no problem carrying my Leatherman Wave in my pocket. Sure, it comes with a belt pouch, but I don't like them.

I really prefer a multi-tool because I hate having to go to my truck every time I need pliers or a screwdriver for something - which is very often. Like someone else said, it has a knife on it, so all bases are covered.

On a side note, am I the only person who dislikes those blades that are straight from the tip to about 2/3 of the way down and serrated from there to the hilt? I can't stand that. If I need a serrated knife, I need the whole blade to be serrated. The two-part style just wastes part of the edge and isn't useful IMO.

I suppose it depends upon a person's needs. I carry a multitool, a riggers hawkbill knife with a marlinspike and a utility knife with me all day. They all get used, because they are better at different things. I never travel on airplanes, and people in these parts view small knives as tools not weapons.

I carry tools separate from knives as I like full-tang fixed blade knives which I have many of. Some are small with 2" blades, and some have 12" partially serrated blades with heavy sawbacks on top. I only carry a small 3" folder in my car because of state laws.

Are you saying the serrated blade on your Wave is like that? Cause the one on mine is serrated all the way?

Oh, I keep mine in a pocket too, pouches are for little girls. And kangaroos.

No, my Wave has one straight blade and one fully serrated like yours. I was just slightly derailing the thread about fold out knives with partially serrated blades being something I dislike. It seems like most pocket knives are like that nowadays.

I've been known to put tools in my back pockets on small repair jobs, too. A multi screwdriver, a small crescent wrench, and a wire stripper/crimper fit quite well in a single pocket, as long as I don't need to sit down. A tool belt is nifty for more intracate jobs, though I usually sling it from my shoulder and set it down where I'm working rather than strap it on.

I like the partial serrations for some things. It makes a knife a little more versatile. Normally I never need it but say I need to cut a dowel rod or something similar. I used it a good amount when at boy scouts when camping and building things in the woods. They do annoy me when I need to sharpen them tho.

That being said I don't have any fondness over a straight blade and they are equal in my eyes.

I just got a Leatherman Crater C33TX and I'm really happy with it. I would call it a knife but it also has screw drivers as well. Its a sturdy knife, its not bulky, and its perfect for sliding into your pocket. The one handed opening feture is really nice as well. It has become the new work knife/tool.

I resurrected that zombie knife thread, so I feel compelled to comment here.

I own 3 multi-tools:
1. Leatherman (the pliars are handy)
2. Deluxe Swiss Army knife (Biggest one you can buy)
3. Random multi that has pliars AND a small hammer on it (this one was a free gift, and the little hammer straight up ROCK!).

Then I own a BIG Boker knife, a folding Gerber, and a folding Benchmade. I use the Benchmade as EDC, but the no-name multi with the hammer stays in my trunk. It's got blades, screw drivers, and other stuff. I don't need a friggin' compass, toothpick, file, or fish scaler. C'mon...

Hopefully this isnt a hate post. I gotta check my steaks on the bbq so it's time to go! Have fun cutting stuff and knives rock! Hellz ya!
