Know it all "I was almost famous" singer? How to endure.

Had a similar experience with a guitarist. He was good, admittedly. But, a little humbleness goes a LONG way in my book.
Ok, you play well. Why can't you pay rent and you live like a hermit!

You're "GREATNESS" is getting in the way of your, "PROGRESS".

G'head, keep thinking you're some guitar god and you'll end up with nothing to show for it and a lot of failed ventures.

Be humble. Support each other. Basically.............don't be a DICK!!!! Hard to do with a bunch of creative people in a room I guess. I guess that's why I'm doing my own thing at the moment.

Humility is big with me too.
BUT - It seems there's always the "Rock Star" that never got out of the garage syndrome happening in a lot of bands.
Divas will be Divas. Too much LSD (Lead Singers Disease)

I've had this unfortunate experience with a Lead Guitar Player who was also the Lead Singer - shudder - he had had some small success on the bar circuit during the 80's nothing since then. He was someone who rested on his laurels from the 80's and expected everyone to not question him. Well question him I did which got him upset - I had asked when he would be working on certain songs as we had a gig coming up in a week and he clearly did not have his part down. He got upset and said he'd have his part together not to worry - well long story short one week later we played the gig and it was a trainwreck. He had not worked on the songs as he had promised, he made samples for the songs that where in the wrong key. At the end of the gig he was very angry - I think it was because I had called him out and he failed to deliver. After that one gig the band dissolved - no emails where sent - no phone calls made it just ceased to be. I think everyone including the prima donna singer/ guitar player knew he blew the gig and to his own fault he could not admit it to anyone. Ego has killed many bands and musicians from becoming successful....

Here's an example of his thought process - he had recently bought a tour bus with monies from an insurance settlement - he was convinced that having a tour bus would allow the band to ask for astronomical fees to play - his logic ( ?) - people will see the tour bus and want to come to the club and see who the band is. The entire hype of the band would be based on the fact that they had a tour bus....You can't make this stuff up people.....

Well, technically, if you keep going (in the bus), you don't have to stop where you don't want to. I get this guy's style of thinking.

Wait a minute, I thought they were all like that.

I'll narrow it down. This is the kind of guy who can't handle the idea of making a fan page because the band doesn't have a photo. If you say "make a collage", it's "that's old school". If you say "have the collage in a square of 5 with the singer in the middle" you'll hear "that would never go on a proper press release" (as if the would currently gives a **** already). If you suggest band names and come up with something in the least humorous you hear "oh, a band like that will never last long with support", but making cheesy BS combinations of words is 'hip'. Logo, color, style, and so on....it's a constant "show me yours" competition.

Maybe its me, but it's like he's trying to psych himself out of being a success by trying to be successful.

I almost flew to the moon, so I know how it works. The landing was a problem, though. That's why I don't sing.

I worked with an "almost signed" guitarist who was just the opposite! Joe Luna. Great guy and had his act together.

The reason Joe didn't get signed? His band was courted heavily in the late 80's. Joe quickly realized the contract the band was about to sign would transfer all songwriting ownership over to the record company. Since he was the main songwriter, there was no way he was going to sign that deal. He walked away, the band signed with a new guitarist, the band went no where fast, and they all predictably ended up owing the record company serious cash.

Note: Our drummer wanted SOOO BAD to pursue a deal, and wanted us to do anything to get noticed and signed, including become a spandex metal band because that was what was hot. Joe would have none of it. We are who we are, and we don't compromise to try and get noticed.

Where is the BL in all this?

Seems simple enough to me, if the BL is good with it, you have a decision to make, stay or go. If the BL is struggling with this then just hold on and it will solve itself, provided your BL is worth their salt.
