Kringle77 sealed 2x12 video

Yeah, I'd think the ability to use pair of 212's (if you're open to that) could make it work. A 212 could do in some situations, then bring both for everything else. Kinda like how guys are using multiples of the SVT210AV cabs. Or make an NV412 clone.

I'm curious to look at the numbers, but I'd guess one of these 212's would correlate roughly to one super twelve in terms of low-mids and up SPL.
 
My first few videos used the cameras onboard limiter to keep the talking and playing levels even but, I found that it took away from the bass sound. Everything was sound pretty much the same. So, I made the judgement to let the talking suffer to make the differences in gear more apparent. I mean, who really wants to hear me talk anyway? Just turn your volume up in the beginning and then down when I start to play. Thanks for checking out some of the videos!
 
Ok. I'm feeling some serious GAS now. :help: This might be the ticket for me.

But still pondering the apparent contradiction between Kringle's observation that his cab takes all that his Genz 9.2 could put out, yet b-b-b-bass's modeling shows maximum volume occurs at <300 watts. So does that mean power compression or some such phenomenon is allowing it to handle power beyond its maximum volume or does the Genz not put out what its supposed to? I realize this is all academic but still the wheels churn...
 
Sealed cabs tend to be more forgiving at louder volumes. I can see someone with a lower powered amp plying one of these cabs and thinking it was crapping out at a lower volume but, it would probably be the amp. I find this is usually the case. Genz probably does over-rate their amps too. And again, the low end rolloff of the shuttle heads probably helps too.
 
The Walkabout doesn't seem to have much of a hi-pass built in i.e. it's very big down low. So if I'm concerned about volume out of these sealed cabs, that roll off down there anyway, it'd make sense to dial back the low-lows to optimize loudness in the lows/low-mids.

I really wish I could try one of these. My woodworking skills and available time probably won't allow me to build one but my friend Interceptor may be able to do it. I guess the other question is the interior volume. There was some indication above that more than 1cf/driver might be beneficial. I don't have any problem toting something bigger than a couple cubic feet so that's something I'd like to look into. I wouldn't want to mess too much with the magic of the cab I heard on Youtube though...
 
At lower volumes I wouldn't change anything. When playing loud or adding a second cab I am cutting alittle at 250hz. Adding 1cubic foot per driver would flatten the response and extend the low end nicely but, t hen you have a much bigger cab. So, its all about trade offs.
 
Did a quick pass at that using WinIsd. I see what you mean. Two cubic feet per driver looks very good, but the box sizes start to add up.

My eminence software doesn't show that much of a hump but, thats the idea. Now, if you had a head like an old svt that can push a pair of 4 ohm cabs, you could make a larger 4x12 with these drivers and use two inputs into the cab. That would rock pretty damn hard. The best layout would be like the nv412 and you could even instal an eminence tweet and crossover for when you want some slapping top end.

Its only about 2 db of a hump. Is that even audible?

A bigger issue is the low end extension. Not sure which is "better" but they sure are different.

For a one-cab solution I think I'd go with a > 1 cf/driver. But 2 cf/driver seems to much. If the small box is 15x15x26 then the big one would be about 30x15x26. Friggin huge! Certainly more than I'd want to tote no matter how light. Maybe a compromise in the 1.25-1.5cf/driver range would be smoother and deeper enough, and more manageable than the 4 cf box. A nice dimension for stacking a couple would be something like 20(w)x16(d)x 26(h).
 
I wish that Bill Fitzmaurice was still active on talkbass.

I'd really like to know if his cross-firing guitar cab configuration, built sealed, with 3-cu.ft. internal volume, would work as a bass cab using dual Beta 12A-2s.

It seems like it could be a great refinement of kringle77s fine effort.

I like single cab solutions, but I have not yet built a 'fearful'. I've quite happy with a single Beta 12A-2 in a 4-cu.ft. ported cab tuned to 40 Hz for the big lows, but I now want to try a kringle77 inspired, SVT-tuned, 2x12 .

Any thoughts?
 
If Interceptor is ready to build I'm ready to fetch his tools and fund it. The main question is how big to make it. As far as cross-firing goes, that takes it to another level of cabinetry. And would the horizontal alignment partially negate some of the dispersion benefits? Victor Wooton endorsed a cab with angled drivers by AMP(?) or someone a couple decades ago. I think it was a bi-amped 2x10 with a 15. Never tried one myself. If I had two 2x12s I'd experiment with angleing them but guess that I'd end up stacking vertically to get sound up near my ears. I bet kringle's sealed 2x12 stacked on his hurtful cab would sound great!
