Kringle77 sealed 2x12 video

My brother visited this weekend and we gave the sealed and hurtful cabs a workout. He loved combining one of each, and I agree. That was a superior sound in alot of ways. He will probably build a pair of sealed cabs for his 70's v4. I want for no cab. :)

Chris

First off, hello to a fellow North Country man. I used to live in Potsdam - 20 miles south of you. We had some COLD winters back then (late 50s/early 60s).

My question: I'm thinking of building a 112 sealed cabinet with this driver - your plan, by half. In terms of sound at a moderate gig volume (say, a small bar), how would that compare to an Aggie GS112 run with the tweeter off? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

p.s., I'm assuming that the Beta-loaded cab will be much more mid-forward, particularly compared to the Aggie, which is mid-scooped. My specific need is for a more compressed classic rock tone. thanks

You pretty much hit it right on the head. More mids, compressed, punchier with less low end bloom. Im not a fan of that aggie cab. But, the aggie would be louder. It uses a more heavy duty driver. You really would want a beta loaded 2x12 for moderate gigs. That is a trade off of sealed cabs, unfortunately. And, I find that 2 drivers paired together always sound better, punchier. It's a case where 1+1=3 IMO.

Thanks, Chris. I'll let you all know if I do it. I hear you about two 12's, but that's overkill for a venue that I'm at a lot, where I'm looking for a specific sound that the Aggie and another ported cab are not delivering. (Plus it's a lot easier for me to hide a 112 at home!)

Well, you could always build a pair of 1x12's. I'm thinking about building two more of these cabs and wiring them for 16 ohms each for an 8x12 stack. There is no need at all but, since when has "need" mattered?

Used the pair of sealed cabs at last nights electric gig. Worked great. Volume on the 12.2 was set pretty low and the cabs were slightly facing into each other. I had good coverage and a punchy sound. I wasn't going through the pa and since the cabs were both on the ground and people were standing in front of them, I turned the upper mids up a bit more than normal. No complaints here, the cabs do exactly what I wanted them to. The only problem is, that was probably the last electric gig that I have for a long time. The live music scene up here is 99% dead. :hmm: I was really hoping to use the hurtful 2x12 at the next electric gig for a comparison but, there isn't one.

Sorry to hear of the dead scene. I've got just the opposite here in Wisconsin.

I'm very seriously considering duplicating the sealed 212, or doing a half a hurt.

Some questions:

1. What did the sealed 212 end up weighing?
2. What are the performance trade offs in running a 2 cu ft box (with two drivers) instead of a pair of 1 ft chambers?

1) I didn't weigh it but, probably around 40lbs
2) no trade offs as long as they are run together. Pairing them up gives you 6bd more in the low end and effects the overall tone. Especially noticeable with the the hurtful. If you want just one cab, then you'll probably want the hurtful.

I had someone build me the cabinet and I loaded it with the Beta 12. The cabinet is 16" on each side, 3/4 ply, stuffed with pink insulation, sealed. Here it is sitting atop my Aggie GS112, to give you a sense of the size. (It's 3" narrower and 2" shallower than the Aggie, but a little taller.)

Sorry, no sound file. (I wouldn't be able to make one that would be useful.) I'm not as good as you guys at describing the intricacies of the tone -- all I can say is, it's a classic kick-a$$ rock-n-roll sound with a 4-string bass, in a little package, and I might build me another! I will play it out this weekend.

Thats great man! Im glad that you like the sound. It really is a solid, old school rock voicing. Probably not enough low end for many players, but I love it. Again, my hurtful cab would probably do the job for most players but, these sealed betas have their own thing going.

Im thinking that running the aguilar with it, with it's tweet turned off, you would retain much of the sound you want with the extra low end you would need at most gigs. I'd run the pair just like it is in the picture.

I waited until everyone left the house.. and... :) Bingo! The sealed 12 adds the mids that the Aggie lacks. Makes for a very flexible setup. Thanks again for pointing me in this direction.

Sorry I'm late to the party. In my world a 2x12 is unlikely to keep up with a loud drummer so I'm wondering how much power these 12s need to complain a little i.e. sound their best. Would a Walkabout (4 ohms/300 watts, 2 ohms/500 watts) have enough muscle to keep 3 or 4 of these 12s happy?

I can put most of what my genz 9.2 puts out into one. Im not sure about your amps. I really like them but, still, the betas aren't like some of these new SUPER drivers on the market and it's still a sealed cab so, you need multiples to do what fewer ported drivers would do in the low end. But I feel the sealed cabs perform better at loud volumes.

Your Genz puts out 500watts/8ohm, 900watts/4ohm. I assume you wired them in parallel for a 500 watt/4 ohm cab (sorry if I missed that earlier). I'm thinking the Walkabout may not be enough to push these puppies into their happy place in which case I'd have to use my B1500 which would be overkill at 1250w/4 ohms, 1900 w/2 ohms.

BTW - Kudos on coming up with a simple, inexpensive solution to what a lot of us seem to be looking for. Thanks for posting it as well as your other designs. I like the hurtful concept too.

When I model kringle77s 2x12 cab using Beta 12A-2s at 4-ohms in a 2 cubic foot internal volume, I see it reaching a maximum SPL of 124dB at 235W input.

It looks like the Walkabout, being able to put out 500W at 2 ohms, would be a perfect engine for two of these cabs. I could not ever see using them at max volume though... that would be something like 130dB... jet engine noise territory.

But heck, maybe your band is called 'Benny and the Jets'.

Yeah, I also think that this is an awesome design. I use the Beta 12A-2 in ported design and find it to be the best bang for the buck speaker. It is actually more efficient than the 3012HO or LF Neo speakers... does not handle as much power, but sounds very very good.

Exactly. They are a really good overall speaker for bass. I think they one of my cabs would handle more than the walkabout could produce at 4 ohms though. Actually, I know. Then again, the 9.2 has a low end roll-off. Again, not the most impressive cab in the world, but is sounds really good, it's light and it's cheap to build. I would probably be even better with more internal volume.
