Krist Novoselic

Krist is and was a great bassist for what he IS PLAYING. His basslines were right in your face in the mix and really drove Nirvana IMO. So many people say this player or that one sucks etc. Thats not cool and its not true. Does Krist suck? No. Is he Victor Wooten or James Jamerson, NO! BUT HE DOESNT HAVE TO BE! Thats the point.

You play what fits the music, his lines fit Nirvana's sound. Simple as that. Just cause he isnt jamming on his bass like Jaco doesnt mean he sucks. He played with Nirvana and they sold about 50 million records. Thats a lot more than 99.9% of any of us will ever do or achieve. I just dont understand why someone can tear down another musician like they do.

I played drums for four years and still play them. Now John Bonham was a GREAT drummer, but he is no Buddy Rich is he? Was he? NO! But can anyone here honestly see Buddy playing with Led Zepplin? Of course not, but they were both incredible drummers, just DIFFERENT. Is anyone else seeing my point here?

I see your point very well. You play your genre of music to the best of your ability. Novoselic played in /grunge/punk/alt. rock and played the hell out of it. He isn't Jamerson but like you said can anyone imagine the soulful James Jamerson playing Smells Like Teen Spirit or Come as you are?

i already made a huge thread on Krist... but this is different I guess with the side projects.. my favorite Krist Lines are probably Hair Spray Queen, Love Buzz, Aint It A Shame.. many more..
hey man. krist didn't write the bass line for love buzz the vaselines did.. and ain't it shame ain't nirvana.... it's just kurt singing... it's some other guy playing bass and drums and the guitar... do some research... it'll do yah good...

Actually, "Shocking blue" wrote the bass line for love buzz not the vaslines, you need to do the research.

I remember hearing about Eyes Adrift way back in the day but that's the first time I heard them. Really good stuff. Thanks for the links.

I think Krist is a great bassist for the genre and I dig that genre more than lots of busier, bass heavy genres that seem to be favored by many on these forums. His basslines worked perfectly with Dave Grohl's emphatic drum work. But really it's all subjective matter of opinion and there's no reason you can't appreciate the subtle playing of someone like Krist and the technical virtuosity of some of the busier players like jaco et al.

Cheers!

Hell, I wouldn't mind the musical accomplishment, legacy and constant income from Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero, and Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah.
That's great rock and Krist's bass was perfect and central to it. Great style, feel and tone. The dude ROCKED.

heh sounds like it should be the other way around.

krist was in a band that was the biggest in the world at one point. and had the opportunity to be in foos. now he's in politics.

that dude... is giving lessons.

That's the guy's big accomplishment?
I respect Chuck Berry but do you know how he rolls? He has his secretary line up a cheap bass player and drummer in each town with a gig. Chuck drives up in his caddy at the last minute with his guitar and amp, sets up, calls the tune and counts off. At the end of the gig, he docks the bass player and drummer's pay for any mistakes or missed cues. That's the contribution and level of interaction Chuck wants from a nameless, faceless bass player.
Your teacher should show respect for Novoselic.

the point is that krist sucks at bass and has not been in a good band since nirvana.

and that dude that is... giving lessons has played with chuck berry and john lee hooker. i wouldn't call that insignificant. :bassist:

Awesome rhythm section (including guitar player), awesome songwriter, awesome voice, great chemistry, great feel and artistry, AWESOME BAND.
It's no accident they made it HUGE. David Geffen heard something special and so did the millions and millions and millions and millions (and counting) fans. Duh!
There, 50 million said it!
Nirvana....awesome rythm section, vastly over-rated junkie frontman.

There, I said it!
