I have a current one and then one I played in 1987, briefly. I don’t know that much of anything has changed but I don’t have a lot of comparison.
Just curious.... there's somewhat of a consensus that many of the post FCS built Kubickis are on the heavy side. My recently acquired '92 sits nicely at 8.5lbs., though a '93 I had was 10.6, and my '94 is still a little hefty at 9.7. How about yours?
I will treat the question as if it were addressed to all.

'89 - 8.6#
Which may support the theory that early ones are lighter.

Can’t say exactly how much mine weight but
My 87 is the lightest.
85 about the same. Few ounces heavier.
89 little more
91 kinda on the heavy side for an ExFactor.
Lastly the 96? I sold was unacceptable heavy off the charts.

Sounds like when the wood was sourced determines its weight. Makes sense - wood being organic and all...
Yeah, I remember being at an event (Bass Player Live perhaps?) where Sterling Ball said that as time went on, it became harder and harder to build a light weight instrument, at their scale anyway.

Okay...got another subject for you guys...
Side Markers. Most of the side markers were applied epoxy paint. All of mine were done that way except my '94, which looks to have actual plastic inlays. On one of my '90 ExFactors, the markers have darkened and have broken down, somewhat soft. I believe it happened due to a reaction with whatever a previous owner used in a neck refinish. I thought it was just dirty until I realized I was digging out the material in an effort to clean it.
I'm considering sending it to the mothership for some spiffing up. Mike wrote that the epoxy paint can soften up over time and that he repairs those with plastic inlays. It's an added expense to his standard neck refinish package.
So I'm wondering, since I haven't seen this discussed before, how are your side markers done, paint or inlays, and if paint, how are they holding up? Also curious how this is with the pre FCS models since I've never held one.

Well, detective, my 86 side markers darkened somewhat to an ochre but on the 89 they look closer to cream. I am not going to bother refreshing the colour. It is an old well used bass and I like it that way.
I can appreciate being slapped upside the head with common sense once in a while.
