That's it! I thought for sure that it originated here in the club thread. Bookmarked. Thank you so much! After going back and reading the entire article, I find it satisfying that the 9v preamp gets the nod from the author in the end.
Has there ever been a poll taken here on 9v vs 18v?

Based on the opinions expressed on this forum, I would hesitate to call the 9V system inferior (as it has been done in various web pages).

I just saw this on Guitar Center online. This is the touring bass I received directly from Phil in 1985 used for my Charlie Sexton years--I sold it in the late 80's. I see it's been gutted and emg's installed. Phil signed it 'For Keith' and his signature...still faintly there on the back of the headstock.

Agree - as one who owned/played both, I prefer the 9v system. Not inferior.

Good question - I did not mean to post anything controversial...I have an opportunity to get one, maybe two, and I wanted to know if they're any good and if they're worth the high prices. The basses are originals.

A Kubicki Ex-Factor (w/drop D capo) can be branded FCS (Fender Custom Shop - early '90s) on the back of the "hs" or can be a Kubicki Kubicki. (pre & post FCS affiliation) It could also be a non-capo Factor (34" scale) All these differences will vary what people ask, but they generally sell in the $3,000-$5,000 range. And yes - they are very good.

Adding to what JIO said (This was my reply to your original thread....but the thread errored out when I tried to post it.)

The market on used ExFactors is reasonably in the $3K~$4K range, with a lot of sellers asking way over that. New prices are about $5K. I would consider one in the $2.5k~$3K range a very good deal right now. Don't be put off by one with the FCS stamp and 9v preamp. Of my 5, the 2 FCS I have are my main players and constant companions.

I don't keep up with regular Factors, Key Factors, or Factor 5s. The EX lever is why I'm here.

OK. If I get more info I will post it here, I might be able to help someone who wants to sell theirs find a buyer. I would want to play one for 24 hours before I spend more than $2000 on any bass, kind of my rule on only buying what I feel is really worth having. I am not a dealer, just a player

Do you play a 5 string? If so and prefer it to 4, then you may not appreciate what the ExFactor brings to us 4bangers.
I would support your position in that case. Your money may not be well spent.
On the other hand, it's a great bass in its own right regardless of the unique extended range capability.

I feel lucky to have conversed with him a few times on the telephone. I'd hoped to have lunch with him being in SF and my partner being from Carpinteria (close to Santa Barbara where Phil was based) but alas he'd already moved back east to live w/family in his final days. Yes.., long live Phil Kubicki -

I did not have the pleasure to speak to Phil. I'm glad many here were able to do so, and share their experiences.

My brief interface impression of Phil in general was that he was a very nice, generous person. He was willing to share his insights in a casual way to me - someone who owned/played his Factor basses. One of my favorite conversations on the phone with him happened on a Saturday morning on a bicycle ride. I had sent him my '86 Ex-Factor to work on a couple days before (from SF) and as it arrived there he called (out of the blue) to discuss proper strings for his bass. I stopped my ride and spoke with him for a few minutes. Thee Phil Kubicki - calling me early Saturday morning! That's who he was -
