Kubicki club?

I'm not sure all Fender Kubicki's fit the description I'm seeing in this thread. Mine has a six position rotary switch and an 18V preamp. Matches nicely with the oval "Fender Custom Shop" decal on the back of the headstock.

As I understand it a number of the initial FCS Factors were made with the 18v preamp that Kubicki had left over. So they used those first before going to the 9v for the rest.

Not only a great-looking bass, but the rare 18v Fender model too - nice!

Did you blur the first four digits of the serial number for some reason? And are those straps part of a special shoulder strap of some kind? It's cool—it looks like your bass is wearing a parachute!

I generally don't post my serial numbers. Well, I have before, but I don't anymore.

The straps are to hold the homemade scratch pad on the back. Aside from a finish crack around a neck bolt (a major bummer, by the way), this bass made it through several years of gigging with no buckle rash on the back. The guys in my band always called them garter belts.

So this was probably one of the first ones Fender produced? It is still probably the most distinctive-sounding basses I've ever owned. In a really good way. My Kubicki through my Super Redhead is just amazing - I think I saw Vail Johnson do that on Arsenio, years ago. He was definitely on to something tone-wise.

I've kind of moved on from it, but sooner or later I'll move back. Right now, its one of my case critters.

It's time for my first string change. A question to the Kubicki experts: are there any full-scale strings that are known to not work well with Ex-Factors? The E string that's on there now has its silk resting on the nut which doesn't strike me as a good thing. Also concerned that certain strings may have the same issue at the bridge.

Most any Reg. Long Scale strings with silk wraps will not clear that E saddle. If it is just the wrap take a razor blade and cut away that bit. I used D'Addario XL's Ex Long scale for many years with no trouble. Phil offers a good custom set with an ex long E too.

Some interesting kubickis on eGay right now... they both appear to be pre-fenders

this one looks like it's seen better paint jobs...

and this one appears to be signed by Stu Hamm if I am not mistaken... also one of the last Pre-Fenders by the SN. I am guessing the seller is a little clueless on this one.

I think that last one might wind up being a good deal for someone!

the 89 green one is not a pre fender. its an early fender model

You sure? The serial is #1252... so according to http://mc2.freeservers.com/kubickifacts.htm it is close but still a Pre-Fender... but yeah I am thinking it could well be a Fender anyway. wonder if it has the 18v?

I missed the last one that went for $811.00 It had some dings but nice.

I am intensely looking at the green one.

I wonder if anyone had an opinion on the wrecked black (custom paint) Factor. Could it be salvaged?

Thanks,
Paul

Yeah I was surprised that one went only for $811... just a few months ago there was another one (pre-fender) on ebay, even more dinged up, that went for almost 1300.

I was tempted to go for that fretless neck that came up last week too...

Not sure about that custom paint one. I don't think I would bother unless I had some skill with electronics and soldering (and I don't). Maybe for the neck if it was cheap enough.

Yea, I watched the 1300 one and figured the 811 one would go high too. So, I didn't bid thinking that it would race up at the end. I would have gone a Grand on it.

(the black one) I'm very handy with the electronics. I was mostly worried about the body being cracked at the cavity.

Well,

I'm picking up my FCS Kubicki tomorrow, so I might be out of the running on these...maybe ;)

I think the best bet for the "Bear" one is a trip back to phil for a full workup. I'm not sure if he would refinish it, but if not someone would. If it goes cheap enough I might salvage it for the parts alone...although I would hate to take one out of circulation.

I saw the Stu signature also and wondered about it. I thought about dropping the seller an email asking about it. I've met Stu a bunch of times and he seems like a great guy so I'm curious when he did it (Clinic ? Special Deal during the endorsement?).

Anway, I'm 95svtcobra on the 'Bay, so if I'm bidding against anyone let me know. I REALLY want to stay married so buying two Kubickis in a week, no matter how good a deal, is probably not too healthy. She's pretty awesome, but not that awesome (Wife -all Kubicki's are awesome :p)
