Fair enough. But at my age I'm not out to put up with too much "visual insubordination" and/or "FU Man!!!" attitude from a band either.
So it rolls both ways. Even for those of us who have no use for the fashion police, and are generally pretty easy-going about most things.

If you look at when they came out, that was their costumes. Most other popular bands had different looks. Even if it was a flashy jacket and makeup.

Okay. We have that straight then. It all depends on where and for who you play for. I live in Central Iowa with a lot of farming communities and very small towns. Most of the crowd that shows up when we play dresses like we do. If we played dinner clubs or ballrooms that is one thing. Playing in bars and taverns is something else.

I think so too! Like I said earlier, dress for your age and the venue. I'm in New England where about the only thing you need to do to be considered "in style" is to dress warmly.
Besides, being only 7 tears apart age-wise, I think out attitudes and tastes are pretty similar anyway.
The shoes and skinny tie set it off.
Expectations of a professional band are going to vary depending on region, venue, audience, genre, etc. I think it is a plus for a band to be themselves, but have a collective personality that an audience will remember. If the look of the band helps it, great.
Compare the expectations of a weekend warrior blues band playing in pubs... to a Long Island-based wedding band, to an LA-area 80's Metal tribute band. Sometimes, it does matter.

We have simple rules. Dress differently than the crowd. Always wear pants.

I can't hang with sloppy looking bands. Being into hardcore and metal means that 95% of the bands that I like to see in that genre are going to be sporting jeans and black t-shirts. I appreciate the fact that my current band dresses like fully grown adults when we gig.
I believe this is why "Live Music" venues are declining. People want to be entertained. When they go out to see live music, especially if they paid for it, they want to see a show. A performance. Something different than their everyday experiences. This IMO is why the bands from the 70's & 80's were so ground breaking. Not only did they custom, they actually performed. Not just played.
