Lady Gaga strange bass

Wow, that's a girl with a whole lot of talent :).

I'm (probably) the only person in this thread who has never heard a Lady Gaga tune (I live in a very deep, dark well - don't ask ;)), but if this is where she started, then it's clear to me that she deserves at least some respect as a musician.

That said, it doesn't follow that we should all fall to our knees and worship her every (musical) offering :hmm:. Personally, I recognise that Jaco Pastorious had a fluid touch unlike any other bassist that I've ever heard and I would gladly put a tick next to his name in a poll for the "Best Bassist Who Ever Lived", but ... his music bores me rigid and you'd never catch me listening to a track from his eponymous album, apart from when it had appeared as a 'random' selection on my iPod (as tracks from that album do from time to time) :(.

Not sure what my point is here ... just thinking out loud, really :hmm:.

I like her. Whether or not she uses a real bassist live is irrelevant to me. The "bass" in the picture is obviously part of the costume.

She understands that music is part of the ENTERTAINMENT business, and she has created a brand. She stands out from the rest of the auto tuned pop tarts of the moment, and knows how to create catchy songs, and keep the buzz going.

Way back in the day, I was (and still am) a huge Bowie fan. Bowie used shock value, but could back it up with well written music that was perfect for the time that he did it, IMHO. Come to think of it, a lot of his stuff has stood the test of time. He was considered "edgy" in the '70's.

I don't think that Lady GaGa is any different. She is a studied musician, a good writer, knows how to use technology to get her music across, and has created a brand. Like her or hate her, to me that is great entertainment marketing, and she will be remembered for a long time.

lady gaga is all style and no substance, if she didnt put on the freak show she wouldnt be famous. im sick of these dancers being at the top of the charts while musicians have to keep day jobs. most of these pop stars r just here cuz of how they look and because their fans generally are too mentally lazy to listen to music that makes you think. y buy an album cuz of the way somebody looks thats what posters are for. maybe the reason record companies are losing money is cuz they dont sell music any more they just sell image.

lady gaga is 100% more talented than madonna. madonna is all shock and no substance. this broad can play a great piano and sing her ass off. besides, it's not like madonna invented shocking people.

She doesn't have "style" in any sense of the word. Her "fashion" is that of a trashy drag queen from Yonkers, which is actually pretty true to who she really is.

the white stripes have never employed a bassist and i think they're excellent.

I really hope this isn't looked at as confrontational/derailment. I just feel real strongly about her, and can't comprehend what anyone on TB could see in her.

see, this is a mistake a lot of people make. they think that because they can't comprehend something, nobody can. but here's something that will be very freeing to you...you don't have to comprehend it. now do i sit around and listen to lady gaga all day? no. do i think a lot of the stuff she does is really stupid? yes. do i think it's really sickening for her to call her fans "little monsters?" absolutely. but the broad can sing and play piano very well so i can overlook the dumb stuff.

kiss helped create and shape early metal and hard rock. im not a big fan of kiss but look at all the bands they influenced. no they wernt the first metal or hard rock band but they were extremly important to music no matter if you like them or not. then again maybe lady gaga will influence some would be lip syncing drag queens out there and start a movement that will change music or even the world....or then again maybe not.
