All the manufacturers recommend not running flats through the body.
Having said that, I always run Chromes through the body.
Never had a problem...
Did u have to get really long ones? Just put DD XL's on my 55-01 fretless and it just barely made it top loading.
Does anyone really believe there is a huge difference between thru body and top-loading (I'm a new Lakland owner so no stones, please!) What causes it, if there is?
Tone-wise? No. I think it's just so you can use different brands and lengths of strings since some brands' longer scale strings have nylon ends that will get in the way from string through.
I haven't noticed a difference (tonally.) I have used the Lakland SS (through body), DR Fat Beams (bridge), and Sadowsky SS Blue Label XL (bridge) - I prefer the Sadowsky strings.
Well i do!! It's one reason I like the Laklands (&G&Ls) To me, you get an extra resonance by whacking them thro the body. You get the extra timbre of all that wonderful timber!

Strictly theoretically, there's more down pressure on the bridge saddle stringing thur the body, creating a better witness point for the string.
This has theoretical benefits potentially including better in-tune-ness, more sustain, cleaner note...
If in a double blind test, you can play the same bass, strung thru the bridge and thru the body, and reliably identify the difference, I'll buy you a six pack of your favorite beverage.

I've not noticed any difference.
I string through the body because that how my bass came from Lakland.
More string has got to be better, right?
More string doesn't really matter past the nut and saddle witness points....between them (scale) DOES matter, hence the 35" scale niceness of Laklands.
Anyone else notice a real touchy action of volume control on the 55-01 with stock electronics? Full volume to way reduced in an eighth of a turn?
I did notice that my volume knob spins very freely - much different feel than any of the other pots. Frankly, it feels rather flimsy compared to the others.
Well, it is a double action stem....pull out for flat eq, it for knob settings.

I've used quite a few pots with a push-pull switch, a few of them are on a 25 year old amp and they are all much smoother and don't spin as freely as this one. I'll probably be replacing the preamp soon anyhow, it's a minor annoyance at this point.
Ok, so I've talked myself out of selling my 55-01. I have ordered some MK5s to try out (it has Nord DC5s now, with series/parallel/single coil for each pickup). Will the switches do the same thing with the MK5s as it does for the DC5s (series/,etc. for each pickup)? Or should I bypass the switches when I put the Barts in?

the MK5 are 4 wire dual coil...I think you can leave the coil taps in, but, I'm no electrical engineer either...probably best to call bartolini, lakland, bestbassgear or someone who has direct hands on knowledge of this.
