Lakland 01 Club Part 2

OK, I've got some fat stacks on their way for my 5501. I'm planning on running it passive, VVT, as I hardly ever tweak from my bass, I do all that from my VT or the amp.

So in the 2 spare holes, I was planning on going with coil taps, but I don't really see the need for having separate switches. I could tap both with one DPDT switch, as illustrated on the nordy website. I suppose another alternative would be to go VVTT.

Does anyone think separate taps or tones for each pick up is worth it? Any advice on pot values, cap values or anything else would be very welcome!!:D

You should run these questions by Nordy.

I know generally two tone controls won't work because they interact with other...

Hi Rob,

We use 250k pots for volume and passive tone, and then a .047mfd orange drop cap for the passive tone. You could do a VVTT setup with a single DPDT switch, that would be pretty versatile. Or you could just leave a dummy pot in there, make it a "producer knob." :)

I personally went with Nordstrand DC5 pickups (each one coil tap'd for single/dual parallel, dual series) and the Lakland LH3 preamp.

If I were to do it over, I'd go with Nord big singles, and the Nord 3 band preamp.
I very seldom used anything but single coil mode.

hey, not sure if this has been touched already, but will the Nordstrand Dual Coils fit my Lakland 44-01? also will it be an easy installation for my local luthier?

oh and how about the Bartolini MK-4's? i'm looking for a super thick sound out of my new 44-01 so im open to any suggestions.

The DCs fit, but there will be a gap at the top and bottom of about 1/8".

The MK4s are a perfect fit.

I have one 44-01 with DCs and one with MK4s. The MK4s are probably closer to super thick sounding. Warm sounding. The DCs are very clear and modern sounding, with very tight lows, good mids and lots of highs, IMO.

The weakest link in the signal chain for the 5501 is the preamp.

Swapping out the pre may get you the results you seek.

Most folks do both the pre and pickups.

I have US Bart MK5's and a Lakland LH3 in mine...

I'm so ready to do my pick ups. I dropped Bo another email about the chi sonics in custom shells. I'm also think of picking up the 5 string p and I am done! This 55 01 is the longest I have gone without trading for a new one lol. I still wish I would have kept that burst one I got from iotanet that thing is killer.

I played a 55-01 fretless into a GK700RB-II and Neo 212-II (same as my rig) at a GC in Attleboro, MA. Awesome...

I hestitated ( a used bass) and lost the shot. Decided rather than wait for a 55-01 fretless to turn up again, I'd buy new.

Easier said than done....where the heck do you buy a new 55-01 fretless skyline in Boston area?

Coming up blank.....:bawl:
