check out the videos I just posted above...that should give you a decent snapshot of my tone with them. I have a gig friday so I'll do my best to get some clips then as well.

Anyone have any pics of cherryburst 55-01's with Pickguards? I've got a maple board cherryburst 55-01 that will be going Chisonic/passive when the MK shape 5-string Chi's come out.

I'm very interested in putting a guard on it to make it a touch more old-school looking, and would like to see some options.

well, I've been in & briefly out & now back in again to this Lakland club. I have to move on the fretted 55-01 to make space briefly. But thanks to the recent purchase of a 5501 fretless, which arrived today.

& feeling jolly chuffed with self, so when I opened up the back plate there's the LH3 Pre-amp! Yay!

Does anyone know how to clean the fretboard- is it just rosewood, so a bit of lemon oil, or?

Lemon oil, orange oil, etc.

I completely coat the board, wipe till it's clean.

Completely coat the board again and let it sit for a 15 or 20 minutes to absorb the oil.

The board will sweat out what it doesn't need.

Wipe away the excess.

I generally do this once or twice a year...

the acids in orange/lemon oil can react negatively with some woods.

boiled lindseed oil is better, or, a dedicated product. dunlop makes a good one, sadowsky has a good one.

any of these can darken the board. if the wood has a figuring you like, be careful.

I've always used orange oil on my rosewood boards...

and here's another Q for you, which maybe some of you guys have figured out.. given the LH3 preamp gives such an range of options to play with, is there a way to secure the rear hatch cover which is more accessible than unscrewing the cover every time?

& is there an explanation of what the different settings do?

I'm guessing you could try some velcro on the cover. I leave mine alone so I haven't tried it.

As far as the settings, my understanding is that the dip switches set where the mid frequency is. As you adjust the mids, the selected frequency is where the adjustment is made. Experimentation is the best way to dial in what you want. Here is a link to the various settings:

Surprised Im just seeing this thread. Heres my 55-01.

Not much to look at now, aside from recently getting Vic to sign it :bassist:. I plan on swapping out the preamp, still debating about the pickups as I like the sound of the barts. Funny that Ive been bringing my Fender Amer Dlx 5 and MM4 to the studio, and last month I brought the 5501, and the producer said "Leave them fenders at home" LOL! Alot of the session guys Ive been with lately LOVE this bass.

On another note, I ADORE this pickguard!! Does anyone have any info on it? Buffordbass sold the bass, but he said it was like that when he bought it originally.

After over 30 years of playing exclusively MM basses:bassist:, I got my first Lakie - a black/rosewood 55-01. It came about when I put a set of Lakland JO5's into an MIM Jazz bass. It was like night and day - I had smooth, even tone across all 5 strings, and there was output for days!

I did some more research and played a few Lakies up in Sherman Oaks, and I had some serious GAS. I kept looking online for about three months until this black beauty came along. Well, I gotta say the 55-01 is the perfect complement between my Stingray and the Jazz. Deep tone but not too boomy; in passive mode I can dig my meathooks into it without any complaints, and for a killer slap-pop I use both p/ups in active with just a touch of lo's.

All of my basses I've owned have pickguards, so I notice the extra gap between the body and the strings. I'm thinking that a nice black pearl jazz style pickguard from Jeannies will so the trick.

Well, now I got some serious GAS for a JO or DJ to fill out the family...

Oh yeah: Here's my family portrait. Can I get a number???
