Maybe my 4401 is a fluke, but I much prefer its sound over my 4402. I tried to like the 4402, but I found it lacked clarity by comparison, so I had to dump it.

I found that the 55-02 models that I've owned also lacked clarity in comparison to the 55-01 models that I've owned.

After recently selling a 55-01 and a 55-02 model that I had, I ended getting another 55-01. I refused to be without one. It's currently my only Lakland.

Gotta chime in some 55-01 love (thanks again, Chef!) I have had a few five string basses in the past, but this one is really great in all respects, especially with the Nordstrand DC's and Lakland preamp. Works great for my modern country band. The low B kills! The only thing I would change would be the color. I have a thing for black and maple.

All of my previously owned 55-01 models and 55-02 models have been natural.

This time I went with black and I am really diggin' it!

It's black with a rosewood fretboard; it's gorgeous!

My Lakie was a 5501D, a great player and not too shabby in the looking, either. Now in the possession of another TBer because I can't deal with 35" scale any longer.

My experience with this piece was one of excellent product and impeccable customer service. 5 stars for Lakland. I found the NTMB-L was a little more to my taste than the stock MK1 pre.

I'd love to swap out pups and pre on my 55-01 but I can't find accurate dimensions of the pups. With a really rough eyeball and a metal ruler, it looks like the width is 1-5/16" x 4-1/4", is this accurate? And, if it is, since it seems that the Nordie's have widths of 1-1/4", I was wondering if there were any issues in properly centering the new pups. And, wouldn't the Bart P2 series pups fit in just as nicely as the Nordies?

MK1's are 1-3/8" x 4-1/4".

Many people have upgraded to Nordy's without a problem.

P2's will also fit without a problem...

I have Nordstrand Dual Coils in mine, which is the same size as all the soapbar shaped nordstrands (big single, big split, etc.) and the size difference is hardly noticeable. Barely any gap at all.

hey guys...here is my new addition. I am going to end up with Nordstrand Dual Coils and an East U-Retro Preamp. I wanted to try the Q-Tuner pickups, but they are a bit narrower than the MK-1's. Better pics will follow when I get home in a few weeks.

I'm eyeing up some used 55-01s on Craigslist right now. May hopefully be a potential owner soon.....
