Lakland 01 Club Part 2

Initially I changed the preamp to an Audere classic. I really liked it but the mids in the Mk1's were a little muddy. Went and put the Nordy big singles in........it was nice, but not really my bag. I waited a while to be sure. I just put the MK5 pickups in tonite. I was just blown away. This is a really nice simple but versatile combination.

Want to hear a bone-stock toothless 44-01? I think it sounds great just the way it is.

Doh! That didn't take long! It was up for maybe half an hour. I'll edit the post, and record something else.
First of all, if you like the passive J bass sound, the Big singles should be considered. If I had it to do again, and I wanted that passive sound, I might opt for the hum cancelling version of this pick up. I like real quiet electronics, besides that, I understand why people like these particular Nordy pick ups.
I can only compare the tone to the big singles I had in. It has less "air" ( less like a passive Jazz bass). The tone has more punch, the lows are stronger especially on the B string. They are a lot more sensitive. You can definitely dial in something really nice in that Marcus Miller neighborhood and back down to something in the passive J sound family. I'm using Fender super bass strings 7250 nickel plated roundwounds in (.30 gauge on B string) longscale. I will put the sound of this thing next to any bass. It will hold it's own. I came home today and I couldn't wait to plug in. It's almost like I couldn't believe the tone and I wanted to be sure it was really there. It was. I'm really happy with the pups.

Maybe my 4401 is a fluke, but I much prefer its sound over my 4402. I tried to like the 4402, but I found it lacked clarity by comparison, so I had to dump it.
The 4401 remains, complete with its cheapo MK-1 elecs.

I kind of felt the same way, although I traded the 01 for a passive jazz.
What do you guys think? I love my 5501 3 tone sunburst it's got incredible tone. I fell in love with it the first time i played it. So versatile and so on and so forth which you all know.
But my question is; osbourne V fretless? I grew up playing my Mexi jazz 4 which was fantastic, which made me fall in love with the neck on the Lakland; the string spacing, the neck etc....but I'm wondering if it's going to have the same "pop" that the fender had, mind you it was fretted. I'm think that the j pups fit my playing style more. But I don't know...active maybe?

I prefer the 01 over the 02. I sold my 02.
Not that it's not a great bass, found myself running it in jazz bass mode all the time.
Figured I may as well get a jazz bass...
I hear ya. Not a big fan of the HS layout, myself.
My 4402 had factory Basslines, which I had hoped would have more edge than the stock Barts.
Did'nt happen. Maybe the Basslines with the stock Bart preamp was the problem, dunno.

Took my 55-01 for its initial road test at a rehearsal last night and I gotta say, it held its own. Having owned a 55-94 for so long, I didn't have a lot of optimism that the -01 would feel and play like my go-to bass but I've been really impressed by this thing so far. One thing that I've noticed is that the body on the -01 is significantly lighter. And, while some would say that this is a good thing, I find that it doesn't sit quite as nicely for my playing style. I tend to have the headstock angled up and there's a very, very small amount of neckdive that I've noticed but that's being really, really picky. And the MK-1 pre and pups? Well, I did manage to get some nice tones out of them, a much a cleaner sound than I thought I'd be able to achieve. My drummer was pretty impressed with how it sounded. The volume was nothing to write home about though and I found that the pickups don't quite have the tonal range of the -94. I think a pickup/preamp swap is in the future. The tuners on the -94 series also seem to be a bit better but, all in all, it's definitely a nice bass. I'm a believer!
