Actually, no; I was hoping for a stock photo. Thanks anyway.you need a photo or a wire diagram? I'm not stock anymore but I could prob find the diagram on google for ya
Oh, they are typically modded right out of the chute? What is the typical progression (preamp first, pickups second, etc.)? What is recommended (asked the noob)? You may be hard pressed to find a stock MK1 here...

Is there any consensus on a particularly good upgrade (please forgive the noobitude)?IMO I would mod it from the beginning.
I played mine until the weaknesses became apparent.
The general consensus is that the preamp is the weakest link.
Even Dan Lakin agrees.
Most folks here do the pre and pickups at the same time.
But if you can only do one, swap the preamp...
I read all the stuff about mods & I'm thinking ok this is a great bass, but all the people in the know seem to swap out the pups & the preamp, so doesnt that tell Dan the Man something?!
Me 3! Due to the LOG bass, I'm now adding a Nordy Bigsplit to this 55-01 that already has the NP5 in it. I will also probably re-design the pickguard a little, since it won't need to cover so much.

I keep telling people. The key to a 55-01 is that it doesn't sound like a P, it doesn't sound like a J, it doesn't sound like a 'Ray. It sounds like a 55-01.Dan likes the 5501 exactly the way it is.
He says its raw, edgy with glassy highs and he likes it.
Many people like the 5501 stock.
I like it too ...
This is stupid. Just plain ridiculous. And here in the new version!

And here in the new version! The sound is unreal. I highly recommend the NP5 / BigSplit combo!

If you accept that for what it is and also listen to it in a mix, it's really a very nice bass, especially for its price point.
I've played the Ibanez bass with MK1 electronics and it doesn't sound nearly as good.
I took my 5501 to a GTG today and people discovered why I'm so hyped on 01's in general and my 5501 in particular.
One guy (CapNSandwich) slapped the crap out of it.
I'm not much of a slapper, but it sounded pretty wicked...
HAHAHA!!! Slapped the crap out of it, that's funny. I wish I could slap it like I wanted to. That 55-01 you have makes me miss the crap out of mine. I wish I never would have sold it. That JO 5'er is another one that made me want to sell a kidney. I'd say you have some pretty babies in your arsenal. Those Bart MK-5's do sound a lot better than the MK-1's. I think your basses made my day today.
