I'm not sure that's true. There's alot of basses out there with two volumes and two tones and two pickups, T-40, Les Paul, etc. Perhaps I misspoke by saying V/V/T/T rather thah V/T/V/T?

Out of 12 or so G&L's, 12 or so Fenders, 5 Laklands, and 5 Reverends, this'un here has become my clear go to bass. Never really had one that stood apart so clearly.
Coil tap'd Nord DC5's (single coil, dual parallel, dual series), LH3 preamp.
Bought 01 used for $500, DC's unused here for $180...Lakland did the install, and the LH3 for $200.
I think you could spend $4k on you favorite Sad/Lull/etc and maybe not have as nice, or at best equal to...
Listening to the bass solo'd, the single coil setting isn't "as pure" as a passive single coil J, and the parallel isn't quite "Precision" in the neck position...in a live mix it does those...and lots more...really well. And for me, the Lakland 5 string neck is the best.
Not sick of it in the least! This might just be the route I go with my '01.

They have to have buffers between them or the tone controls will interact...
Yup, that's mine! I put it on there so I could maybe buy Dr. Cheese's 55-02. He was selling his '02 for $650 shipped, but is reconsidering now. I want to go local so that I don't have to mess with shipping.
My '01 is a decent sounding bass but I want to change out the preamp and the pickups. That could run me $450+ if I do it the way I want to. If I could instead sell my '01 and pay a little extra to get an '02 it would solve my "I need to improve the electronics" issue.
Just curious - you live in Virginia but were checking Tacoma Craigslist?
Right on. As you've heard before...that is a fantastic looking bass! I may end up getting one of these and switching out the elex one day.
Yeah, just putzing around. Sometimes folks are willing to ship that post on CL; but not often.
Thanks about the bass! I should probably just be patient but it'd take me about a year to save up enough to change out the pickups and the preamp. I'm thinking I want to do what Chef did with Nordy DC's and a Lakland LH3.

what happens if you sell it and cheese's bass is gone or he doesnt want to sell anymore? your not gonna find a nicer 5 string for the money.id hate to see you end up selling your bass and not being able to get an 02.id just hold on to your bass they sound good the way they are. they just sound better with the upgrades.not only that but his does have a crack on the back and yours is mint with beautiful grain. theyre going to play the exact same way.but it is your choice so i wish you the best with whatever you choose.

An 02 is not at all the same thing as an 01...you really better play one before you buy one.
You guys are right. My bass is a very nice specimen and worthy of upgrade. I'll just be patient and make it the bass I want it to be.

at least you know what you have,you could get rid of your bass and realize you hate the way the 02 sounds. then youd be in the same boat with wanting to swap those electronics out.i have an 02 and honestly i play my 01 more.and my 01 is stock.i actually like the way it sounds.i know it can be improved, but its really not like it sounds that bad the way it is.i know when i do end up uprading it,it will probably blow the 02 away.

How well do the Nords mix with the LH3?
Yeah, probably a good idea. That's a great looking bass and light. Now you just horde away a couple bucks here and there until you have the opportunity to get the elex used or new.
I had a beautiful deluxe 02.
Best neck profile, lightest Lakland I owned. Gorgeous maple quilt.
I always played it in "Jazz" mode,
then I got a JO5, which just kills.
No comparison.
So I the 02 collected dust.
It was a great bass, but I sold it...
I saw a great deal here on TB for brand new Big Singles and could not resist. I paired them with a Audere Classic 4 preamp and I can't ever imagine regretting it. It sounds fantastic and was a fun project too. Thanks to jwbassman for paving the way.

Where did you put the Z mode switch and the LED?
It is hard to tell from the pictures, is the gap around the pickups noticeable from a distance? How much gap is there at the top/bottom?
Its the Classic 4 Band pre so no Z mode switch and no led.
There is a gap of about 1/8 of an inch on the top and bottom, much much smaller on the long sides. You can see it from a few feet away but it does not bother me. I shielded the pickup cavities the cheap way (aluminim foil and craft glue aerosol), and the foil was really noticeable. So I bought some black craft paint from walmart, comes in a marker pen, and painted the foil only where it was exposed. Now the only thing you can see is the white wire from the pickup itself if you look at them head-on, if I feel ambitious someday I can put a heat shrink on those.
The white lines you are seeing at the bottom of the pickups are actually spots where the finish must have rubbed off when the pickups were installed at the factory. What is funny is you have to look at them from about an inch away in person but they seem glaring to me in the photo.
On a side note, the shielding job cost about 5 bucks in materials, an hour and a half of my time, and the electronics are really quiet. Considering the rest of the aluminum foil is being used in my kitchen and my wife is using the glue for crafts it did not even cost 5 bucks. I am really pleased and glad I did not spend $30 to have copper tape shipped to me.
