I could be wrong, but.. I think it's a function of the fairly cheap mK1 preamp. Even in "passive mode" The battery has to be there to complete the circut. IIRC you can stick a completely dead battery and it will run if you are in passive.

I'm pretty sure of this because I've had times where you could tell the battery was dying, but when you pull the pot it sounds fine. Passive, but fine.

For folks who are switching out the pickups, if it sounds good passive, why not just keep it passive and wire up some pots with a couple of Orange caps. It's only 25 bucks or so in material?

If you want to go straight passive you'd want to do up a wiring harness of some sort. You'd also want to figure out what to do with the extra holes. That's why a Nordy DC with individual series/single coil/parallel switches setup works:

V/V/T take up three holes and the S/SC/P switches take the other two.

Hey, I can find some dead batteries to try ;)

And I *am* thinking of going straight passive. That's why I wondered if the blend was passive.... I would be tempted to only connect the neck pickup if not.

I may also connect a cut only treble control. But that is only if I decide I need it.

As to what to do with the holes? Leave the pots in place. Makes it easier to wire it back up to the preamp.

Oh man that is HOT!

If I went passive and kept the mk1 pups, I would probably go with a v/v/t/t and a series-parallel switch.

By the way, I'm pretty happy with my stock 55-01, but I think that the preamp is a much weaker link than the pups. I played a 44-01 at the lakland factory that had the MK1 pups and a LH-3 preamp and it sounded really frekin good! I didn't have nearly enough time to explore all the tonal options that that thing had to offer. That was going to be my plan for my 55-01, but after playing the Chi-Soncs, I decided to wait availability of 5 string Chi Sonics to mod my 55-01 with a passive Chi setup.

I'm probably going to go with an Audere preamp of some sort with the MK1 pickups before I decide on new pickups. I'm with you on the Chi Sonics - amazing sounding pickups!

I'm looking at the big singles, so the switches wouldn't work for me.

I'm just not too knowledgable about wiring stuff up.......if someone could post a wiring diagram of a simple V/V/T setup that would be awesome!

Does anyone have a link to that website that sells all the different knobs? I know I ordered some Sadowsky style knobs a few years ago from a site that had all kind of cool knobs

By the way you can't do t/t passive without a buffer or filter.

Both tone controls will control both both pickups unless you have a
buffer between them because the circuit will form a loop between the tone controls...

Total GAS. I think you've convinced me (as soon as I'm ready to buy) to get a Black with Rosewood 55-02. That, or a 55-01 with Fat Stacks and the LH3.

Y'all are probably sick of me posting this pic.

Out of 12 or so G&L's, 12 or so Fenders, 5 Laklands, and 5 Reverends, this'un here has become my clear go to bass. Never really had one that stood apart so clearly.

Coil tap'd Nord DC5's (single coil, dual parallel, dual series), LH3 preamp.
Bought 01 used for $500, DC's unused here for $180...Lakland did the install, and the LH3 for $200.

I think you could spend $4k on you favorite Sad/Lull/etc and maybe not have as nice, or at best equal to...

Listening to the bass solo'd, the single coil setting isn't "as pure" as a passive single coil J, and the parallel isn't quite "Precision" in the neck position...in a live mix it does those...and lots more...really well. And for me, the Lakland 5 string neck is the best.
