I did much the same thing; but moved from the glassy, brittle MK1 preamp/pups to the same coil tap'd DC5's, and the LH3 preamp.

Nice bass.

just fyi:
nordstrand are making their own preamp now.
had that been available when i did mine, that would have been my first choice...

I might go with an Audere 3ZB (because of the Z-mode switch, active blending, and active volume) but we'll see. I do like the sound of the MK1 pickups but they're pretty aggressive. Someone described them as having a "barking midrange" and I would definitely agree. They're very suited for a rock or metal sound - not really my sound.

Chef - you describe the DC's sound as pure or piano like, right?

So my 55-01 dreams are subject to change and just a "twinkle" in my eye at the moment. :D
I totally know what you mean! Do I do Norstrand DC's in a passive setup? Do I do the same DC's with an Audere Classic 4-band or 3ZB? Should I go simple and use Norstrand Big Splits with an Audere pre? All of the options cost a different amount and would give a different sound.

Make yer head spin, won't it!?!

I can do pretty much what I want with the one I have. But saying that, I usually think in terms of one more traditional sounding and one more hifi - or maybe characteristics of both in one bass.

Big Singles Here I come...

Have you ever bought something with the intention of making it better or great and then had second thoughts?

I've got a really nice 55-01 but am unimpressed with the preamp. The pickups are good but not really my sound. I had planned on putting an Audere preamp and either USA Barts or Big Splits in it, but that's another $460 at least! Is it really going to be worth it? I can't save more than $35 a month for this, so it's going to take some time.

Will replacing the pickups and preamp make this better than average bass into a world class contender?

A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways...

ST,

Congratulations on the burst. It looks really nice.

To fourstringbliss, think of it this way... Is an xx-02 a world class contender? If you say no, then you might want to look elsewhere.

But if you say yes, then an xx-01 with upgraded preamp and pickups is a world class contender. They are the same wood and craftsmanship.

The upgraded electronics will make an absolutely huge change in an -01 and will put it on parity (although likely with a different tone) than an -02.

My Big Splits and NTMB preamp have completely changed the sound of my -01. Everyone that can A/B it with another -01 completely agrees, and it's a very positive change.

As an aside, check the classifieds regularly. I got my Big Splits in the classifieds for MUCH less than $250 for the pair.

No one can answer that question for you...

Again another question no one can answer for you.

At best it's a subjective assement.

You have dozens of reviews on TB of similar wood combinations and electronics.

I went the direction I did with my first 5501 because someone else did it before me.
I trusted his assesment and I'm glad I did.
I would stack my 5501 against any bass anywhere at any price.

I've never played a bass with Big Singles in it, but I've read many reviews on TB and my buds here have never steered me wrong.

My next bass will be equally bad-ass as my first one, I'm sure.

I'm pleased enough with the results to do it again...

Thanks Bob! I just needed some reassurance that I wasn't wasting my time. I know the 55-02 is a world class bass and I'm glad to hear that these upgrades will make my 55-01 that way.

Nice, SuperT!! Are you changing the preamp too? Sad or Nordy or ?

Thanks!

Not the natural I was looking for but still outstanding never the less.

I don't know which yet.

I want to have jazz bass that can give that nice dry passive jazz purist sound
and also the Jazz Bass on steriods thing that Sadowsky is famous for.

I'll probably wait for the reviews on Nordy to make a decision.

Lakland is starting to put LH3's in their jazz basses,
so I'll have to consider that one also...

I'm just glad *someone* finally snagged that CAR/maple 5501 for $499-shipped, with case no less!
Man, that was making me sweat...you have no idea how hard it was not to buy that with real live funds in my paypal account...

I'll go round him up and send him over here;)

That CAR had me going too!

Not a fan of red, but that one was quite the looker!

Probably gonna wait a while to mod it but I'm leaning toward the Nords with no preamp..........I think I only saw one person in the thread that ditched the preamp altogether. Anyone else?

I was thinking about it, but I have so much fun with my preamps.
Like when I flip the Z mode switch in the middle of a song and it sounds like a bomb exploded.

I sent Nordstrand a message about preamps and here's their response:

Hello Super,
Thank you for your interest in Nordstrand Pickups.

The Big Singles are probably my favorite pickup that we make. For big tone and authority, there is little that compares to them.

In terms of a preamp, it really depends on what you're looking to do with it.

If you like something aggressive, I would recommend the Sadowsky or the East.

If you want a massive amount of bass boost at your disposal, I would recommend the Aguilar.

If you like the character of a passive bass but want more headroom, I'd recommend the Audere.

If you want something for the studio (tone control but no real signal boost),
I'd recommend the Glockenklang.

If you want something a little more neutral, I'd recommend our preamp or the Suhr.

I hope that was some help but please feel free to write if you have any more questions.

Take care,
Stew
www.nordstrandpickups.com

I like the fact that he's not trying to sell me on the Nord preamp.
You'll notice that's his last recommendation.

So I'm down to either the Sadowsky or Audere or possibly the LH3.

I love my Audere in my JO5 and I love my LH3 in my other 5501.

So it may boil down to cost...
