I just pulled the trigger on the CAR 55-01 in the classifieds.....only $499 shipped, can't beat that with a stick!

Probably gonna wait a while to mod it but I'm leaning toward the Nords with no preamp..........I think I only saw one person in the thread that ditched the preamp altogether. Anyone else?

congrats!i love that color with the maple neck. i had a trade deal working with him on that. but he decided to sell instead. but thats all good. ive already got a 55-01 that i still havent modded. i dont need another one just yet.post some pics when you get it.

Much to their credit, Nordstrand know and understand their competitors products.
Also much to their credit, they list their product last, instead of tossing you a breif sales pitch.

I'm going to yank an exisiting preamp out of *something* I own with Nords in it, and replace it with a Nord preamp.
As good as thier pickups are, I have a very hard time believing they didn't spend a lot of time and effort dialing in their preamp to make the most of their pickups.

At this point, my most likely candidate is my Valenti Geddy Vee 5 string with Big Singles and the Audere...which I think will move to a G&L;)

Ain't life fun!

Here's another "new product on the market" idea.

Leave it passive, and Get Ye a Tone Hammer. Run it outboard with whatever ya want.

Yea, I thought about that too.

But I'm trying to keep my pedals to minimum.

If I was gonna go that route, I'd have to get the Sadowsky outboard, although the tone hammer is more flexible...

Duh, I didn't even read the last posts before I posted that I bought that CAR 55-01. It was just meant to be, I was at my buddies rehearsal space listening to them for a minute and thier bass player plays a 5'er and it really had me GAS'n for another 5 string. I've owned a JO5, Fender 5 string Jazz, and a few others just to end up selling them. So yesterday I started browsing for a fairly inexpensive 5 string that i knew would have a nice B string and what do I find!! Another Lakland.....best B string of them all! :)

Right now I'm leaning toward the Big Singles and wiring it passive but I'm not sure what to do with all the holes where the preamp knobs are?

You have dozens of reviews on TB of similar wood combinations and electronics.

I went the direction I did with my first 5501 because someone else did it before me.
I trusted his assesment and I'm glad I did.
I would stack my 5501 against any bass anywhere at any price.

I've never played a bass with Big Singles in it, but I've read many reviews on TB and my buds here have never steered me wrong.

My next bass will be equally bad-ass as my first one, I'm sure.

I'm pleased enough with the results to do it again...

Thanks! I was just having a case of cold feet. I'm sure it's going to work out to be better sounding than the stock 55-01 to me (though I know there are those who are pleased with the stock sound).

I was thinking about pulling the trigger for that one too! Gave me crazy heartburn haha. Waiting for an inca silver with maple board to pop up...they seem to never show up.

i'm currently running a set of Big Singles passive in my Squier,, i just filled up the empty holes in the front of the bass with cheap little plastic plugs that i got at OSH, ( orchard supply ) they are available in every size with 1/16" increments, starting with 1/16".

( altho,, all the holes will be filled soon, as the bass is going down to Brauer Guitars in the city & getting a Sadowsky pre / VTC, & PLEK'd ) :hyper::hyper::hyper:

i also own a 55-01 that i absolutely love

Wow, that Squire looks great. Am I allowed to say that in a Lakland thread? :hiding:

It would look better with a black bridge though IMHO. :D

( i never would have posted this in a Lakland thread,, i just wanted to show the little plastic plugs )

sorry for the hi-jack

Couple of questions about the 55-01 or similar.

Is the blend passive or via the preamp?

Does anybody have the preamp pin outs? I can work it out but if somebody already knows them....

I am thinking about going passive, and wondering if I can test by unplugging the preamp and shorting some of the connectors (i.e. no soldering).

The blend is passive and works in both active and passive modes. For passive operation just pull up on the volume control - push/pull active/passive switch.
