The neck is not as wide at the nut and the width of the neck is not
quite as big. I will say this, if you have ever played a Marcus Miller or a 75RI Jazz the neck on those feels
the same as those and the MIJ 75RI that I personally own.

Im not a huge active lover, but I want something that can do it all and plus some, and it seems like the 55 is a better option.

But Im not counting out DJ5, as I saw Johnny Langs bassist rocking one, and his tone was to die for..

I like the version we made...

This 's been recorded live with a zoom h2 put in the center of the studio room.

My DJ5 is ran through an old Genz-Benz 4x10 cab and a Hartke LH-500.

Careful! From everything I've heard, the Chi's would be an expensive "downgrade" for me. I love the Lakland pups. I can see how folks like Chi-sonics, Darkstars, Fralins, and others. But I don't consider those upgrades! I know what you mean though!

Have you seen the Lakland LH3 demo on youtube? It might surprise you how nice the active electronics sound.

I'm really not trying to sway you either way, but my first two Laklands came as a pair. A 55-02 and a DJ5. The DJ5 was very nice looking, and it felt pretty good, but not as good as the 55-02. And I spent a little bit of time comparing the 55-02 in "jazz mode" with the DJ5. While there were some differences, I swear they weren't that much. I compared them side by side, and at two full band rehearsals. I loved both basses, but at the time, didn't feel like the DJ5 offered enough difference tonally over the 55-02 to warrant keeping it. So I sent it back to the dealer and got a 44-02 instead so that I'd have a 4 string. Now I have a 55-02, 44-02 and a 55-02 fretless. I want another DJ5 because I just think they are so sexy.

If the aesthetics are drawing you to the DJ, then go for it. If it's the tone, well, I think 95% of it's tone is in the 55-02. Other's who really love their DJ's more don't agree with that.

And in case you didn't know, pull a knob on the 55-02, and it's passive.

Yep, its only the aesthetics sucking me into the DJ5.

Ill see how much of a hit I take on my new Avatar cab, and then see where it goes from there.

Either way, Im going to save for one of Atkinsons refins.. I want something special like Marcus'! :D

He asked me about setups that I've tried, and I said that it feels more like an "age" issue, as this is new old-stock. The bass is an 07, so it's been sitting in a warehouse somewhere for a couple of years, and now it seems as though the board has shrunk a bit here and there and settled in, yet the plastic fretlines are raised a bit in some spots or lower in others. Nothing really bad and most folks wouldn't notice it, but it's causing the notes to pinch in a lot of places. He asked for my number, and a sales guy called me back within 15 minutes. They've issued a call tag with UPS, who is coming to pick the bass up from me tomorrow! Carl is going to give it some TLC and send it back.

Although this is my 4th Lakland, it's the first time I've ever called them for any kind of service. I wasn't expecting it to be this easy at all. I mean, it's not like Lakland is a small outfit anymore, right? Kudos to them, as this just gives me another reason to quit screwing around and buy that DJ5 I want!

Hard? Like... screwing it on? :)
Seriously, I ordered a cream pearl pg for my black Shoreline 55-94 Classic from Jeannies. It cost me $51 or so (which is way too much for a nice piece of plastic IMO). It came with a protective plastic and a set of screws, was very well routed so it stuck tightly around the neck and the neck pu even before I screwed it on, and pimped my ride from a working horse to a circus pony in a snap.
