I couldn't stand the neck on the Fender P5, but then again, not many can compete with the Lakland necks. I'm still holding onto some hope for the Skyline fiver......

Well, compared to a Lakie fiver, it felt like a 2x4... Actually, it wasn't THAT bad, but I'm spoiled, and it wasn't right for me. Definitely thicker and rounder feeling.
I've been thinking about something similar for practicing at home. I leave my Eden WT550/D210xst (4ohm) rig parked at church 1. so the other bassists can use it too and 2. I really dislike lugging it back and forth (yes I'm lazy thank you very much). The "old" church rig is an old Hartke 4x10 with a Hartke head (it's in bad shape, one driver needs a recone and the head is rusty etc). I'm thinkin' maybe an Eden D112xlt with a MarkBassF1 or Eden WTX260 head. About a year ago at a GC in Jacksonville, I played a MarkBassF1 into an Ampeg 410HLF cab...blew me away that such a tiny head could have so much power and tone.

Well, back to the Lakland subject matter....
yeah, I have had the eden 112's, and when I ran three of them they sounded good, but I did not like the sound of only one. I like that I can get the avatar with a single 4 ohm driver and get the full 500 watts out of the WTX500. I have a 212 when I need something bigger...but I am looking for a single 12 that can cover a fair of amount of my gigs....church, practice, studio....stuff with low volume of plenty of PA and monitors. Maybe if the Epi's are available at the end of the week, markus and I will have to chat.

well, if you want an eden 610xlt that used to belong to Dan Lakin, we can chat....lol...or let's see how my week goes and what I have available. Hoping to pull the trigger on a fretless here soon.
+1 ... sold my Fender P5 to get a Glaub (4 strg) ... that B string and that neck doesn't felt right to me.. great instrument.. but not as comfy as my 55-94 and my skyline JO5

I think I will always have to go with a modular rig. So light, so versatile! One for home practice, and two for out. Haven't played out in a while, but hopefully if I ever get more time...

I hear ya...although the 610 does get it done when I need it. My Jetta holds less gear than my Wrangler Unlimited...and with the drive I have to band practice (about 95 miles, one way), I find the jetta being the car of choice....(30mpg). Modular it is!

It is amazing how thick and rich these cabs are (with my Laklands...keeping it real) for how light they are.
I recently went through the same thing. I really need a P, but I just don't play 4 stringers anymore. I went to a Guitar selling Center that sells Fender P5's and was ready to purchase. After about 20 minutes, I finally got someone to acknowledge me, and he took the P5 down and I played it. A couple of things I noticed:
-The fretwork was really, really poor. Big feeling frets, sharp edges and very uncomfortable. That doesn't even factor in the lack of even a modest attempt at setup. It had to be an isolated incident, as otherwise no one would have ever bought one. But it was enough for me.
-The B just didn't seem to be there as much as my JO5.
To sum it up:
So I just put Chromes on my passive JO5 with Chi-Sonics, and run it off the front pickup when needed for now. It's close enough, but more importantly, it plays well. I have the DJ5 CS with nickels to take care of the other tones. This is gonna have to hold me until a Skyline P5 comes around.
He he he! Forgot about that skit! Yeah...I think the ChiSonics on a Jazz to a decent job of sounding line a P bass when the neck pickup is favored. Love that tone...one of my favs!
