-Is there a big difference in feel between the Joe Osborn neck and the 44-02 neck?

I personally prefer the LH3. I've heard that the EARLY Barts are nicer, but all the ones I've heard from the past five or six years just sound dark and lifeless to me.

I have never tried a Lakland with the old Bartolini system, but I find the LH-3 to be pretty dark, IMHO. I usually run the treble boost at 90% or so to get the top-end to open up on the bass. I love the tone - it's my go-to 4-string for the studio for sure - but I have a hard time understanding what others are talking about when they say their LH-3 equipped basses are 'bright'? Thoughts?

Well, I'm not saying that the LH3 is bright, but the Barts (to my ears) just sound dull and woolly, not nearly as thick and rich.

Can't help with the number but the 44-02 has a 1.6" nut and the neck profile more flat (front to back). The JO has a 1.5" nut and has the typical J bass shaped neck.

Hmmm , and the bid on the damaged Decade on the 'bay has went up above what I'd wanna spend on it too. So, we won't be swapping necks, sorry.

Why didn't you just put a P pup in your JO5?

The more I look at Doude's PJed 5er, the more I think that "aesthetically" the pups look crowded (reminiscent of the old Stu Hamm Urge bass, remember that one??). I like the look of the JO/DJ bodies w/ PJ configs much better.

Don't get me wrong Doude's BG5 is awesome. I'd just prefer it w/ just the P pup, looks-wise. But ironically, history tells me that I just don't dig straight up P basses . I needs me a J or preferably a MM pup near the bridge .

I would still buy ANY BG5 if I had the funds though and one was available. Curiosity is a killer!!

yeah, I saw that on the decade...bummer. Anyway, I just like the look of a P body. that's all and that was kinda my point. I can get what I want with lakland sorta, but after the initial investment, you have to sink a few hundred more in to get the mods done (I would never try to route a body...lol), and teh cost of some of the mods (a bound and blocked 5 string neck) makes it not reasonable to do on a skyline. It is almost as much as the cost of the bass. I really wish Dan would make it an option on the skyline 5 string neck. I assume it would go over well as an adder. I mean, just look at the number of 55-01's, 55-02's, and JO5's that are out there. I am sure a few of those would have B and B necks...anyway, I stil llove my non-perfect lakies...

I also set the treble at 70% during in a full band setting. But usually roll back to 30% in a bedroom playing. I also find that there is not enough low end. So it sounded too bright in the quiet playing situation (finger noise is kind of annoying although it can be easily remedied by fretting more carefully).

I have low end for days, but I have ChiSonics. Maybe that's the difference.

It seems like the treble boost on my Bartolini system doesn't do much until it's boosted all the way, and then there's too much.
Anyone else get similar results?

Ok, so the promised can of worms ;-)

I've never played or really heard a CS bass (save for the samples on the Lakland site). So today I listened to the samples again, particularly to the JOCS and JO, flats and rounds.
To say the truth, as heard online, I think I like the "regular" singles more than the CS It may be the computer speakers or something... To me, the CS samples sound more "shallow" and "flat", maybe "neat" whereas the singles have those accented jazzy "bumps"...

Please tell me if I'm wrong.

I wish you could too! Chis are all around fuller...I think standard singles are a more harsh...not more aggressive to me.

This, Denis. Fuller, and with a growl of their own that I actually like better than that of most standard J pickups.

For some reason, the Chi-sonic clips on the JO don't do justice to the pickups, to my ears. Have you listened to John/Gecko5's live youtube clip posted on the LOG? The parts where it's just drum and bass are a more accurate representation of the single-coil Chi-sonic tone, IMO.

Try playing them with Quicktime. I've found Windows Media player to be pretty finicky to me too.

you definately have the older LH3 if it doesnt have much bass.
