LAKLAND OWNERS GROUP #45

Well, these are a biiiig disappointment to me, for two reasons:
1) they sound virtually identical to the DA XL170SL bright nickels I took off. warm, phat, articulate...but no more top end.
2) despite the fact that the strings were physically long enough to string thru the body, the final exterior wrap wasn't. strung thru the body left skinny undersized strings rattling in the nuts. hey dunlop: booo!

marcus: nuttin' personal. while these strings are as nice as my fave DA XL170SL, they're no brighter, and they're a fail in terms of string thru the body.
while I personally don't really hear or feel any diff string thru body vs string trhu bridge, i have no idea why dunlop would make the inner string long enough to do so, and fail to wrap the outers long enough to make it workable without having to put a new, skinnier slotted nut on.

Wow, that really sucks, but you saved me some money Alan. Last week I tried the DR Marcus Millers for the first time on my JO5 and BG5, and am REALLY happy with them.

This isn't at all to say they don't sound good. They do.
Very, very similar to DA XL170, which have been my fave nickels for years.
They feel nice, and I kinda prefer the 125 B of the dunlops to the 130 B of the DA's...

I've emailed both the perfect bass, where i bought the strings from, and Dunlop to explain/complain about the length issue. That's just dumb. They don't make one set at a time, so if this is an error, they'd have a big batch of them out there.

I'll report back whenever the various c/s people respond to my length concerns.

Also, I agree that the eBay one is pricey. Citing the list price is always a dodgy move, especially when it's higher than the one listed on Lakland's site.:hmm:

Further followup on the 55CS itself:

It's a gem, and on a level of craft with my three other faves:
Sadowsky Metro RV5; alder, r/w, hc singles...big, modern jazz
Valenti JJ5: alder, r/w; sadowsky singles and preamp: really aggressive jazz
Alleva LG5; alder, r/w: very organic but with a nice grind and edge to it.

I typically run all these about the same:
biased to the neck pup a bit unless the song calls for more bridge-ness
active treble boosted a bit, active bass boosted a little less; passive tone dialed back a little bit.
This eq lets me use passive tone only to go from really edgey to pretty chocolate.

I was hoping the Chi's would land between the Alleva and Valenti in terms of edge, but, they're pretty organic...Love the bass, but, it seems "like duplicated effort" next to the Alleva.

It sure does sit just right in a mix, and I really enjoy it. Sounds great, feels great...but, I'm not feeling a long term affair though, because of the note above...if I do post it for sale again, it won't be for any shortcoming of the bass itself, but rather cause I already have a really great toolkit.

Well crap with chocolate sauce! Sorry to hear that. My JOCS is ash...that must make a difference with the highs. Sorry to hear they didn't work for you Alan:hmm:

DA make an SL length specifically for that application.
Some makers, like DR, make one length to cover all.

I made usre to ask if this was the case or not with dunlop, and the rep at perfect bass did actually pull a set and measure against a 5501. just didn't account for the exterior wrap not being long enough; which he really would have had to mount them to see...
