I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.
I was fortunate to purchase BG #115 (it's a PJ) a few months ago and really love playing this bass.
After I played my first weekend of gigs with it in late October, I posted here that there was quite a buzz when my fingers weren't touching the strings. That wasn't as pronounced in some other venues since then, but it's still there.
However, this time I'm wondering about another "quirk":
While playing around with this bass, I noticed that the volume level using only the P pickup full-on is noticeably louder than the PJ together full-on, and the J only full-on is a distant third place.
I used the db reader app on my Droid (no, it's not professional grade, but it's the only reference point I have) to check my ears. Leaving the amp volume constant and playing the same riff with as close to the same right-hand technique as I could tonight, the P-only full-on hit 60 db, the PJ blended hit 55 db, and the J-only hit in the upper 40s-to-around 50 db.
This is my first PJ and I'm wondering if this is considered normal or is something out of whack here? There were almost eight years of previous ownership, and I don't know the bass' history.
I believe this bass was made with Fralin pickups back in late 2002, and, if it matters, I'm maybe twenty minutes from the Fralin shop here in Richmond if there's anything they might be able to check.
I love this BG's classic look and how the bass feels on my shoulder and in my hands. I want to love everything about the instrument, but the buzzing when I'm not touching it and, more importantly to me, this pickup volume discrepancy is bothering me. Thanks in advance for any advice.
