Yep, just did this test and it's almost identical to yours... maybe a little less pronounced, but definitely twisted.

Guess I'll get in touch with the guys at Lakland and get the ball rolling.

The slight twist may be in-fact due to the amount of tension of the heavier strings on the bass side as opposed to the treble side of the head when pulled across the nut?

Just a thought. Try raising the saddles slightly.

Correction - I mis-spoke earlier with loosening the trussrod. <-- That would affect the lower register frets near the nut.

Do you think I should try tightening the truss rod a bit? I've loosened it a couple of times in small increments but it's not improving. I tried raising the saddles and even with uncomfortably high action there is still buzz...

Seems strange that the tension of the string could be high enough to warp the neck, then again I'm no expert... I emailed Lakland and am waiting to see what they think.

Don't mean to stomp on what Gordon is saying, but if your neck is like mine was, it's firewood and no amount of tweaking will fix it. Also, the smaller strings are higher tension than the fatter ones.

Call John, don't wait for an email reply. They'll replace it, so get a box rounded up for the neck.

Yep, contact the shop. Call Leo directly, don't email. My very first 44-01 had a neck with a twist very similar to that about 4 years ago and was taken care of splendidly and without question, well before I was associated as an endorser. I just had to take the neck off and send it to them; they shipped a new neck to me. Unless you're using crazy heavy-gauge or strangely-matched gauge strings, the tension shouldn't be enough to cause a warp like that. If it's like that out of the box, it's defective. It happens rarely, but it can indeed happen. All my other Lakland necks have been perfect. Hard winters like the one we've had can affect the basses in storage and shipping. To see a 55-02 (which has graphite reinforcement) with a neck issue like that is super rare.

Supertanker . . . which Dunlops are you using? The stainless steel or the nickels, and what gauge are you using? I assume they're long enough for thru-the-body stringing?

I use the steels, mediums, 125 for the B string.

I don't run them through the body.

I can't remember if they're long enough, I'll have to check...

I currently use Black Beauties on my 55-01 and I had to go through the bridge although I didn't notice any difference in sound.

Has anyone heard from John @ Lakland recently? I emailed him to check up on the progress of my Lakland bass build that's been 5 months and he hasn't replied to my email for 4 days now..

He has been traveling with his band.....alot!

However, I have a major problem with calling an off-the-shelf bass (or whatever) 'custom.' I hate what marketspeak does to words, and for a company that got the model names so nicely in order, I think that the 'custom' moniker was a disappointingly cheap direction to take.

"custom" refers to the B&B neck....a way to differentiate from the std necks....I am not sure if I see it as "cheap"....JMHO

I'm not crazy about what marketing does to language, either, but this name doesn't strike me as egregious. Now if they'd called it 44-60 Kustom, that would sound cheap.

I can't think of a good alternative off the top of my head. 44-60 Blocks Binding Matching Headstock and Jazz-Width Neck doesn't roll off the tongue too smoothly.

Hey there! Picked up a DJ5 skyline on the classifieds here a couple of weeks ago. I'm in the process of making a carbon fiber pick guard for it, and just grabbed a J Retro deluxe pre to drop in it, also found here in the classifieds! The pups are nordstrands and I was wondering if anyone else here has tried the nordy/east combo and what your thoughts on it were. Thanks in advance for any pointers/help/advice you might have.
