I just received a black 44-02 with a maple fretboard. I'd post a pic, but it's going to Pat Wilkins for a refinish in candy tangerine, as soon as he gets back tome. THEN, I'll take pics.

Big deal . . . custom, kustom, 44, 55, Vintage J, JO5, etc . . . whatever, we just like saying "Lakland Custom," whether it means anything to anyone or not! It means something to me! Hell, according to the UPS online schedule, mine is supposed to be delivered today, and someone is already beating the bass up!

I won't bash Lakland for the numbering system, but I'll admit that I haven't spent the time to decode it yet.

If Lakland named their basses after streets in Chicago even though it has nothing to with configuration, a name provides an identity more so than a number.

Look at it this way what if "Markus Orange" was "110224" instead. I can get passionate about "Markus Orange", not "110224".
Markus Orange has become a brand unto itself.

It's all about branding.

I think simple is always best...

Just thought that I would share this with some fella's that can relate....

After going to 2 different GC's and a Sam Ash these last 2 weekends, and trying MANY different basses.... I just wanted to say. "I LOVE MY LAKLAND'S!!!!"

I don't even play ANYTHING at GC anymore...I might go in to get a strap or some strings but I have LONG since given up even looking at the wall of basses...except the occasional "sneak peak" to see if there are any used Lakies!

What he said. I used to love going to GC... Now it sucks.

Just a quick shout out to Leo at Lakland. I recently had some issues with my rear pickup on my 5594 and he went above and beyond in taking care of the problem! Just one of the reasons I own three Laklands!

Well, let's just say that it will be replaced by something just as spectacular. I'm just a Maple P guy, but don't worry, I'm still a metal flake guy too!

Been playing my early Candy apple 55-01 5-8 times a week at gigs for the last year. Tried out a friend's early version black 55-02 with maple board and Barts and honestly......it was just too tame. I feel like I have more control tonally with the 01 and can bring out the stank or cushion with technique and EQ. The Barts equipped 02 was softer, less aggressive and a bit subdued. Great bass, but I think i really lucked out with mine. Any similar feelings?

nah - all a matter of taste.....I had Lakies for several years before playing an -01....really liked it actually...."less expensive" does N OT mean cheap by any means!

Have you been in contact with the guys at Lakland yet? Sorry you're having to deal with this. Unfortunately, it's sometimes "the nature of the beast", when dealing with wood. Hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Yeah...I'm sure they will take care of you.

Maybe someday the Skylines will get quartersawn necks... can't be that much more expensive, maybe $20 a neck right?

I would definately work with the mid settings....the LH3 is typically brighter and has a few more mid-settings and MAY be the way to go but try the cheaper route first...you SHOULD be able to find a setting you like...if not, yo can always sell the bass to me ...he he!!

Okay gentlemen I need your help/suggestions. I'm new to the Lakland family. I'm typically a single coil pup, jazz bass player (not jazz as a genre but jazz bass).

I love the feel of my bass....it plays like butta! However I did my first gig with my 55-94 and was really disappointed. I was expecting it to punch through the mix like single coils do but instead it sounded soft and really lacked authority.

By the way I had the mids set at 250Hz. Bass control up a bit as well as the mids up a bit and the treble control was set at center. It didn't matter if I had both pickups on or if I had the pan control set just a tad to the bridge pickup. Either way, in a live mix, it just didn't sound like I had expected it to.

So is it the Bart pre & pups? Would anyone suggest I check out the Hanson pre & pups? Has anyone ever experienced this? HELP!!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just ordered a 55-60 to go with my 55-02. Too bad I have to wait until probably July for it to be ready.

I just keep playing this one for now.

nice on the new bass coming BUT that 55-02 is a sweet one for sure!!!! Cherry burst is one of my favs!!

Love the setup on it . . . I doubt that I can get a credit card in anywhere, yet no buzz . . . AND it sounds awesome through my Eden rig!

I will try the Audere, or one of them, as I would like a passive 'on' option!

Just got my new gorgeous 55-02D!!!

However, after doing my routine setup , there's still a lot of buzz in the upper register, so I think the neck is warped

What do you think? The headstock definitely isn't flush with the body...

Yep, just did this test and it's almost identical to yours... maybe a little less pronounced, but definitely twisted.

Guess I'll get in touch with the guys at Lakland and get the ball rolling.

My pickups were the Lakie pickups though...so no help on the Nordy issue....

I'm in the process of making a carbon fiber pick guard for it, and just grabbed a J Retro deluxe pre to drop in it, also found here in the classifieds! The pups are nordstrands and I was wondering if anyone else here has tried the nordy/east combo and what your thoughts on it were. Thanks in advance for any pointers/help/advice you might have.

I think you know this already, but there is a J-Retro that is specific for the DJ, it's called the DJ-Retro. It looks like the one you picked up will have to be modded to fit the DJ. And it is a Deluxe, which requires drilling a hole for an input jack on the side... I'd be curious to know how the operation goes, please let is know!

It sounds good as it is, but I really wanted to try the Retro. I'm hoping it will match up well with the Nordys and let their inherent tone shine through a bit more. Best results for me would be to get it close to an old school passive sound,..but with more flexibility tonewise. Yeah, I know,...asking for a lot here,.best of both worlds!

Oh wow, good. You will still need to drill holes for the little switches on the DJ plate, right?
