FWIW, I played #156 (4494) at a GC here in the DFW metroplex. It's at the Plano GC if anybody's interested. It is in cherry burst with maple. The figuring on the body and neck is OK. It's not the best quilt top or BEM fret board I have seen. For a moment, I thought it was a prototype. It had the typical Lakland bridge, but the bridge did not say Lakland....the neck hardware was different. Instead of the ultra-lite Hipshots, it had exposed vintage style Hipshots. Also, the neck screws and washers are different than current production. Another thing that was different was the three-way toggle. The toggle on this bass wasn't like the blade toggle on current basses. This was more like an exclamation point shaped toggle. It has the Bart pre and Bart pups. The pups are worn down from string play. Aside from the wear on the pups, the bass in pretty good shape for a 97' model. They want $1700 for the bass (no case). I was going to offer them $1400. But the salesman ignored me for the last 1/2 hour I was there. So I said it 'f' it and left. I got a new Skyline JOBO in the way anyway. It was a nice bass though.....gotta love early Laklands.

I believe you have to turn in your chrome bridge due to restrictions... Lakland doesn't want people putting their bridges, w/ "Lakland" stamping, on non-Lakies. You may be able to get one thru Lakland, via an exchange. It's been a while since I called Hipshot to ask for a black bridge, all I know is the answer was "no, not being made for bass owners."

I don't have a prob exchanging one for one. I kinda figured that would be the deal anyway.

I just got one a couple months back from Hipshot and did not have to exchange it. Sold it to Gordon and put the original chrome back on. The reason I removed it was that it sapped some of the zing and mellowed the tone out a bit, which didn't cut it for me on the 44-02.

Yeah, you could email but I'd check the specs on the Lakland site for those US models (Skys get diff hardware) and call/order direct from Hipshot.

Cool, policy has changed or worries died down, either way it's good to know.

My Traci (avatar pic'd 55-94) has black tuners and chrome bridge. Bought it used that way. Wonder if I used the chrome saddles on a black bridge bass, would I lose the "zing"? Hmmm
